Insidethe “flying geese formation” shaped plan (like Nijo-JoCastle and Katsura Imperial Villa), a flow line leads from analley-like approach to an open lobby facing the garden, and on to the guest rooms, luring guests into a secludedretreat with an extraordinary vibe.

The villas are located on the cliff edge of Uluwatu, Bali. The tropical weather and bountiful nature in Bali create this relaxed and laid-back atmosphere, and multiple faiths reside on this island in harmony with the existing local culture. In general, the island is populated with low-rise buildings mostly in Balinese style architecture which adds to the resort atmosphere.

The Yellow Diamond building’s triangular site is located in one of the most dynamic, creative districts in Seoul. Surrounded by several universities, the area has an energy and sense that anything is possible. I felt that uninhibited artistic expression was appropriate for the site. I also wanted to celebrate and inspire the tenants that may occupy this building in the future.

This project was commissioned by a Hong Kong-based developer for whom we previously designed two high-end retail projects (in Akasaka and Omotesando). The site constraints, including sky-openess factor (tenku-ritsu) and sun/shadow requirements were very restrictive. Careful calculations were done to arrive at the best balance of forms while satisfying the regulations and achieving the maximum FAR. By developing the formal strategy as a series of interlocking cubes, we were able to massage the complicated building envelop shape into a dynamic composition.
