This house, which is located on terraced land on the northern slopes of the Serra de Sintra, had undergone a series of modifications over the years. All of the houses in the village of Eugaria were built in the same way, creating a settlement with a unique identity and feel. The house is at the heart of a property that includes a terraced garden, pathways, growing areas, wellheads, courtyards and terraces, seeming to merge gradually into the woodland that swathes the hillside beyond.

The project’s main goal was to connect the two autonomous apartments on the top floor of a building in the Lapa district of Lisbon. The building - comprising a basement, 3 floors and an attic with a single fraction per floor - was built in the last decade of the 19th century. The main floor’s original layout, like most of them at that time in Lisbon, still has a continuous row of rooms that allows for different functions. The kitchen and the only bathroom in the apartment were located at the back of the building. All the areas were served by an extensive corridor that allowed for a transversal connection between the front and the back of the apartment.

Until mid 20th century, the site area was a farming territory in Benfica, northwest Lisbon. A water stream (Ribeira de Alcântara) provided plenty water to assure fertile lands. Water streams and fountains were a landmark. Fonte Nova (in eng. New Fountain) became the popular name from which the area was known. The site was crossed by an important road in Lisbon’s urban fabric: Estrada de Benfica. In the sixties, the radial city road (2a Circular) was built. A flyover of 2ª Circular divided the site in half. This condition had a big impact in the area: the farms were destroyed and the continuity of local roads and pathways were broken. Over the years, the site became a parking lot, and end up using all the space available.

The gesture of painting a street in pink synthesizes in a very pragmatic and effective way the need for change. It created a dynamic public space, inclusive, opened and multifunctional which enables access to one of the most precious values of our time: information. At Pink Street one produces, shares and consumes culture.

Since its construction in the late 18th century, there has been a great deal of changes and modifications that deeply modified the original character of its fractions. As project strategy and as a way of reducing costs, the decision was made to accept its existing heterogeneous character.
