We planned the new head office for Uchida Shōten, a hardware manufacturer established 160 years ago in Fujisawa City, Kanagawa Prefecture. The surrounding area flourished as Fujisawa-juku, the sixth post town along the Tōkaidō road during the Edo period, a town lined with inns, teahouses, and merchants. Traces of this history remain in places, and the site itself is characterised by its narrow, elongated townhouse-style plot.

Bohumil Coffee in Seoul is located in an old reinforced concrete building in Seongsu, a former factory district that has transformed into a trendy area with cafes, shops, and galleries. However, the building was slated for demolition and reconstruction, and the owner, Mr. Kim, was looking for a place to open a temporary shop while reconstruction was underway.

On Kouri Island, Okinawa, we designed a place for visitors to relax and enjoy a beautiful sea view. It consists of freestanding villas for families and groups of several people, all designed to allow guests to stay in privacy without worrying about the noise of adjoining guests. The premises are divided into two areas: one is a long, narrow site along the road, with an undulating topography; the other is a trapezoidal site, with an elevation difference. The plan was to build a series of villas on these narrow and distorted sites, but repeating buildings of the same shape there seemed difficult. Considering the inefficiency of making different plans for the individual buildings, we developed a more efficient design method using an inverted V-shaped unit combining two standardized plans.

Since the Edo period, Funamachi has flourished as a river port where people, goods, and cultures come and go. It is also known as the terminus of Matsuo Basho’s “Oku no Hosomichi” (The Narrow Road to the Deep North). The Funamachi Base, created to provide a lively place reminiscent of the past, began with the idea of a Japanese confectionery shop with a cafe as an extension of the adjoining park.

Le Labo is a fragrance brand from New York. I first became aware of the brand in 2016, when many factory-style stores, such as Blue Bottle Coffee and Dandelion Chocolate, were emerging in Europe and the United States. I was walking down the streets of London when I chanced upon Le Labo’s distinctive space, with its striking matte black steel storefront reminiscent of a laboratory. My curiosity was piqued, but I wimped out and didn’t go in because I didn’t know what kind of store it was. Later, a friend told me it was a fragrance brand called Le Labo, with an in-store lab for manually blending fragrances, and it left a lasting impression on me.
