These unique places are not just private escapes but also bridges between the past and the present. The hidden residential building in the center of the city was built between the 1960s and 1980s on the remains of a war-damaged coach house using found and salvaged building materials. The result is a fascinating array of height differences, split levels, and rooms with diverse layouts, all stemming from a gradual, yet imaginative reconstruction process.

The historic 18th-century villa is situated in a prime location on the shores of Lake Como. Its exterior walls extend to the water, and a small harbor is connected to the boat garage under the house. With a 180-degree panoramic view from east to west, the house is bathed in sunlight throughout the year. The octagonal villa survived the centuries almost untouched until it was conventionally renovated in 2019. The current renovation for a family of five aimed to reclaim the unique character of the house and garden, while integrating new elements into the historic structure in an engaging dialogue.

VoltAir is a pulsating urban building block for new office spaces at Alexanderplatz in the heart of Berlin. With its distinctive stacked cubes, the design emerged from an invited architecture competition in 2014 with mixed-use clusters for brands, sports, and hospitality. After a change in ownership, the sculptural design was adapted and revised in response to a change in use. In collaboration with the property owner and in constructive coordination with the Design Advisory Board led by Regula Lüscher, the qualities of the design were preserved and strengthened. The arrangement of glass cubes allowed for a playful interaction with the Berlin skyline.

It is now a physical home for a group of startup companies working in the green tech sector, operating under the “umbrella” name 1886Ventures. The applied data protection pattern on the outside provides a symbolic location for these innovations that announces the new by referring to the tactics used to camouflage so-called “test mules,” testbed vehicles in the automotive industry. Drawing attention and keeping secrets are kept in an ambivalent balance.

The completion of IGZ’s new main building on its extended campus is a significant step for the software company’s own economic positioning, as well as part of larger regional efforts to increase employment opportunities in rural areas. IGZ is a fast-growing company in IT logistics and Industry 4.0: part of the digital boom we have experienced since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic and the growing possibilities for innovative developments, fostered by European financial and economic support. What is more, the infrastructural measures put forward by individual municipalities to maintain and create jobs have an impact on the entire Upper Palatinate region. For these reasons, sustainable and innovative planning and construction were the centerpieces of the new IGZ Campus module in Falkenberg.

n.n. represents a spatial exploration between concealment and exposure. This layered topography blurs the line separating landscape and construction. It is the private residence of a family in a rural area along the River Moskva. The geometry of the floor plan fuses the building with the ground it is located on by removing individual layers and creates spaces between the strata. A cross-section shows a rich variance between the floors, and the internal links and gradual transitions toward the outside develop open layers for a flexible and programmatic organization of space.
