Making the most of a compact space, the second floor took advantage of plentiful sunlight. It features a truss without columns to bring a stout and expanse atmosphere to the gathering space.

A couple retired to the countryside. As newcomers, they wished to be open and contribute to their new community. Following this idea, the house was planned to be open and public, centering on the retired preschool teacher wife’s picture book collection, a simple hall for the husband, a flute player, and a garden, without a wall, like a park. To support this open lifestyle in the long term, we also were careful to make private spaces for the couple.

MU consists of a dwelling for a couple combined with a photo studio in the small northern city, Hachinohe, Aomori. People often gathered at the existing studio as if it were a meeting place of the town, and we aimed to maintain that atmosphere while considering the couple's privacy.

After the big earthquake in Japan on March 3, 2011, the client inherited a sunny plot of land in a residential suburb of Tokyo, Japan. The destruction that was caused by the earthquake forced the client to spend a short period of time living in isolation and as a result, the client is now intent on designing, for the purpose of a peaceful life, a residential apartment for himself and his tenants.

Originally, the second floor was an old style Japanese lodging with several walls dividing the floor into tiny rooms. Since then, numerous renovations and extensions were carried out. Immediately prior to our joining the project, the second floor was used as a part of family house - a bit chaotic and still with a scattering of columns, remnants of the old walls.
