This small 2-story art studio replaces an even smaller, uninsulated, structurally unsound, rat-infested 2-car garage.With impending demolition, an opportunity was presented to cel¬ebrate the life of the anonymous building. Hundreds of holes were drilled into the building, resulting in a kaleidoscope interior during the daytime and a pumpkin lan¬tern at night. A party was held, and the next day the old garage was demolished.

City of Bothell Public Works Operations Center Administration Building / Hutchison & Maul Architecture

This is the first major public project designed by Hutchison & Maul Architecture. The site is located in the Canyon Park Development north of downtown Bothell. The new 2-story 16,000 sf administration building utilizes conventional steel framing with metal siding and roofing. The building is long and narrow, and oriented in the east-west direction to minimize solar gain and maximize natural cross ventilation through operable windows.

The Owner requested a small potting/writing studio, an outdoor deck, and a fence to separate the driveway from the garden. The project is sited between an existing residence and a concave-shaped hillside to the northeast. Construction drawings were limited to a floor plan and two building elevations. Details were sketched onsite with the builder using a carpenter pencil on plywood.

Upside-Down House / Hutchison & Maul Architecture

This residence for a couple and their two children utilizes the foundations and walls of an existing single-story post-war bungalow. The traditional placement of private spaces above public spaces is inverted, with bedrooms and bathrooms placed at the main floor level, while a new second story places the kitchen, living and dining spaces into one large communal room with views overlooking Cascade mountain range. A large operable skylight marks the center of the room.

Lake House / Hutchison & Maul Architecture

This small guest house is located as close to Lake Washington as permitted by code. The structure is elevated above a patio to preserve the flat portion of the site for outdoor use. Concrete retaining walls set into the steep hillside provide for an entry courtyard.

The site is very steep, long and narrow – 50’ wide by 400’ long with an average slope of 35%. Located on the west side of Mercer Island, there are panoramic views west towards Seattle and the Olympic Mountains beyond. Zoning permitted construction on only 35’ of the 50’ property width, and limited the height of the building to 30’ relative to the slope of the site.
