This proposal is a renovation of an existing store, for the settlement of a Medical-Esthetical Clinic – “Corporación Dermoestética”. The existing space is integrated on a building which, as many surrounding ones, is from the 60’s and 70’s. The urban front of the street where it’s located - Av. António Augusto de Aguiar – has very homogeneous housing constructions with commercial purposes on the ground floor. It was urgent to keep and emphasize this homogeneity and the introduction of good quality commercial spaces was the way to ensure it.

This intervention seeks to maintain only the two main existing facades of the building, at North and East, given the high degree of deterioration of the overall volume. Although the existing building is not a remarkable architectural example and with construction quality, contributes to the cohesion of the urban image of the set to which it belongs, so the maintenance of facades allow the continuity of the dialogue between the building and the context in which it operates.

According to the architectural and photographic survey, it is noticeable the lack of visual and direct relationship between the interior and the terrace on the backyard area, as well as the organization of the interior spaces seems too rigid and not suited to the use of a dwelling at the present days, and for the clients in particular. The aesthetics of the built set also lacks of a cleanliness of secondary elements such as emplacements on the facades, walls and any outdoor area.

This project is characterized mainly by its peculiar volumetric development. It’s articulated in step horizontal boards, following this way the terrain morphology. Composed by four housing blocks, the whole set is articulated by two vertical access volumes, without windows, ripped only on the contact with the floor and on the rooftop for zenithal lighting. Those two volumes, recessed towards the rest, ensure a break on the whole, disallowing it to assume big unscalable proportions which would compromise its integration in the environment.

The Project of “Estoril 153” intends to solve the difference of levels between two streets. This is done with the creation of a services ground floor where two housing volumes settle. The volume A, with 5 levels, ensures the west urban front of the Mello e Sousa street. It´s turned to the sea and that explains the multiplous terraces it has as well as its grey color that is inspired on the foggy days sky common of this coast areas. This color is also the color of the predominant stone – “azulino de cascais”.
