This row-house-style apartment building in a high-density residential neighborhood is designed around the theme of spatial rhyming. The challenge was to create six three-story units that give residents the freedom to live as they choose, with a sense of both individuality and belonging, yet also maintain a consistent tone throughout the building—in other words, to flexibly adapt to a wide range of design conditions.

This project is an attempt to provide both connection and appropriate distance between the residents of a property that includes condos with long-term owners as well as rental units occupied by temporary tenants.

Located in an alleyway off a shopping street, this property is closely bounded on the east by a road and on the south by a three-story apartment building. The building contains two independent residences—one for a mother and the other for her son and his family—which were designed with the possibility in mind of eventually turning them into rental units.

Located on a lot with a narrow frontage, this building houses a gallery on the first floor and a residence on the second and third floors. The client requested that the gallery have a glass facade to allow good visibility from the street and be a single open space to ensure flexibility and allow for future changes in use. They also requested a separate entrance to the second-floor residential area, and a design that required no structural walls on the first floor, such as a Rahmen structure.

The client requested us to design a house made of reinforced concrete on a site in a lively neighborhood near a station and a busy commercial district. However, the ground condition around this area is very poor and soft. If building a 3-story reinforced concrete building, we would need to install pile foundations driven deep into the support layer, which would be unrealistic due to the large construction cost. In order to decrease the weight of the building, we adopted the composite structural system comprised of reinforced exterior concrete walls and conventional timber infill including interior walls and floors.
