Key Project Details - Darya Building is one of the millions of Infield buildings located in Tehran, which must adhere to top-down regulations for its design. In recent years, Tehran, like many other cities in Iran, has experienced a surge in urban construction, primarily focusing on medium-scale buildings within the urban fabric. Apartment buildings have become clustered among each other, often only receiving light from one side. In this project, the façade is designed as a green and light-enhancing surface, achieved by creating a double-skinned façade. An inner layer, made from glazed materials related to the void spaces, reflects copper-colored light into the interior spaces, transforming the project's façade into a green wall. In this project, the idea of green spaces, windows, and interior spaces are integrated to create a unified structure aimed at improving both indoor and outdoor spaces.

Being handed a half-finished project can be one of the most challenging tasks offered to an architect. The Saman Satellite project was offered to us when its structure was halfway established in the Technology campus park, where a new definition of office functionality began to emerge. The existing state of the skeleton and project path had deviated from the original architectural plan designed by another architectural firm due to the decision of the stakeholder. They have also changed its overall structure. Also, the client decided to add new spaces to the existing skeleton. For us, the main goal in carrying out this project was to create a culture of cooperation to advance the hybrid design as the outcome of the two architectural firms. The new idea for the project was to evolve the concept of its previous structure and design to create new potentials with another thought for the project to reach aligned results. In such projects, where the initial designer has completed a part of the work, usually, when another architect accepts to carry out the rest of the procedure, the step is not taken to continue and develop the initial idea. Therefore, the outcome will vary from the initial idea. Our design policy was to direct the direction of maintaining the overall character and creating a complementary potential. To do so, we have taken several approaches.

The residential fabric of Tehran is mostly a dense accumulation of clung buildings. The predefined master plan of Tehran dictates regulations that limit buildings to have openings only on two sides and to implement a central light well to compensate for the lack of proper sunlight penetration. In such an urban fabric, the connection of people with nature gradually degrades to a minimum level. Therefore, the amount of green space decreases in the residential neighborhoods. Air pollution is one of the main consequences of this situation.

Building as a single element of the city has an inevitable influence on its urban surrounding. During the design process, it is crucial to consider this mutual effect to create a win-win relationship between the building and the city. Our approach to each of our projects has somehow been in line with this criterion. In Kohan Ceram project, our mission was to have minimum formal disturbance to the city. In this project, however, the form was the key to realizing the essence of the project. Here, the formal elements were used in both the overall entity and the individual parts.

Commissioned by the University professors, Peykasa office building was designed as a communal work space adjacent to the Sharif University of Technology. The design was developed over an existing structure which was already built up to the ground floor. The given criteria was to design a building in harmony with the main brick buildings in the university campus. Therefore, the main challenge was to come up with a formula which takes the essence of 1960’s architecture of the university and combines it with the contemporary atmosphere of a technology based institution.

These changes has enormously affected the lifestyle of Tehranians in the recent years to such and extend that smaller apartment units have minimum access to open or semi-open spaces. The research focus of this project was to explore the urgent need for new residential models in Tehran.

In order to achieve an integrated organization, they used a spatial diagram, which defined both the inside and outside of the project simultaneously. This diagram is influenced by the building’s site, and also the existing status of building and additional sections. More images and architects’ description after the break.
