In their previous life, the 25-m2 overseas containers transported consumer goods across the ocean; today, the 63 containers have been transformed into a hostel where keen travelers can dream of the open seas. With its construction from recycled intermodal containers and its unique location by the harbor, the design hostel on Zum Zollamt in Warnemünde has a real connection to shipyards rich in tradition and to the open seas beyond. The building complex is divided into two parts: A four-story structure made from recycled, soundproofed overseas containers sit on a two-story base structure of steel, concrete, and glass. The base structure comprises an open, inviting entrance hall with a restaurant, bar, guest kitchen, work stations on an integrated gallery and a boulder hall.

Surrounded by the local harbor and shipyard near the town center of Warnemünde, Germany‘s first upcycling hostel was created. The idea to build a hostel out of vacant overseas containers is unprecedented. The interior design captures the rough charm of its surroundings, the industrial look of the harbor is playfully paired with urban nonchalance and a maritime feel.

ELLI – Residential Building and Studio
The "ELLI" project is a prototype for individual inner-city redensification. In a commercially used courtyard area, a five-story residential building emerges, with a minimal footprint and a double underground floor with a spacious studio and event room. With a footprint of only around 5 by 10 meters, the new building has highly compact living space. At the same time as the construction of the residential building, a studio was also installed. For this purpose, the full courtyard was given an underground level and an extensive column-free space with large skylights was created.

The elevation of the volume draws reference to the proportions of the neighbouring buildings. The tapered upper floors of the two office towers rise above the retail space and emphasise their urbanistic character. The terracing of the building makes room for a spacious public roof terrace – an urban piazza – inviting office staff and shoppers alike to take a break and relax.
