On the narrow plot, surrounded by villas and large trees, the elongated residential building integrates the walls of the existing house. The split levels of the existing building are being reinterpreted and zone the ground floor: There are various floor offsets that create different spatial impressions.

The existing small family house with a saddle roof is renovated and expanded by the architects with a new volume to offer appropriate space and a contemporary configuration for the young family. As the existing floor of the old house is lifted up one meter, the attached wooden box is elevated as well to ensure accessible internal connections. As a result, the box is furthermore protected against flood to the small brook beside the garden.

The existing building from the 1970s is part of a settlement, which is affected by the same building type of houses. These prototypes are placed more or less without regard to their orientation, the terrain, or the position of next-door houses. As two of the facades are windowless the house reminds more of a row house than of a free-standing house. Besides this, the house lacks a functional floor plan for contemporary living:

The “White House“ is part of an architectural ensemble of two residential buildings, located in the “Waldvillenviertel“, a popular suburban district in the city of Mainz. Besides the admissible building density, a sloped roof shape was one of the building requirements on the plot. The layout of the house enables a pleasant usage of the garden and takes care of the existing vegetation with its oaks and pine-trees and regards the existing site topography.

The “Black House” is part of an architectural ensemble of two residential buildings, located in a popular suburban uptown district in the city of Mainz. The admissible building density and the sloped roof shape were building requirements on the plot. The slim layout of the house enables a pleasant and generous use of the garden and totally respects the existing vegetation with its impressive old oaks and pine-trees.
