The "beating heart" of the Multnomah County Library system – because it keeps the entire system running – the new Operations Center is essential for effectively managing more than 500,000 catalogue materials and outreach services. This adaptive reuse project transformed a vacant 1995 grocery store into a bustling 73,000-square-foot workplace in vehicle-dominated east Portland. The Operations Center is the first project to meet Multnomah County's ambitious fossil fuel-free buildings resolution and anticipates LEED Gold certification as well as Living Future Net-Zero Energy certification. The design prominently features more than 600 solar panels that will fully offset the building's energy use.

In its simplest form, a fire station comprises little more than a dwelling with an oversized garage. At its most complex, it embodies the values of its community and functions as a highly technical machine for emergency response. That understanding, infused with aspects of storytelling and context, inspired our design effort.

Nestled in juniper and ponderosa pines and volcanic boulders on a gentle slope, on the rim of a dramatic canyon, Cascades Academy of Central Oregon houses students from Pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade. The 38,500 SF independent school near the Deschutes River consists of distinct wings forming a protected courtyard: the main wing with a library, science labs, and offices; the commons, upper and lower classroom wings; and a detached gymnasium.

As part of a bond measure to expand classroom space, Portland Community College (PCC), Oregon's largest institution of higher learning, purchased a 15-acre site in Newberg, Oregon, to develop a new educational facility. As the first building on the site, creating a welcoming sense of place was critical to the success of the campus. The large, south-facing roof reaches beyond the building’s shell to create a sheltered entry plaza – the front door to the campus.
