Diwan-i-Khas was the hall of special audience during the Mughal times. If we look at the image references that are available through miniature paintings of that era, we can infer from the typology for building design and construction. The structure presents itself as pavilion set against a wall. Often some tensile fabric system would serve as extensions to the pavilion. Le Corbusier’s Assembly Building in Chandigarh also creates a similar gesture towards the large plaza. The sickle shaped roof supported by concrete shear walls acts like the tensile extensions of the Mughal pavilions.

The site is located on an urban fringe between the urban village and planned settlement of the South-East New Delhi area. The idea was to create a space that acts like an oasis in the derelict landscape.

The project entailed altering a 1970's structure to accommodate the client's current functional / programmatic requirements. The building is a generational home belonging to a single family. This led to a mixed-use development for the site which incorporates a lawyer's office, a dentist clinic and a residence for on-site staff. The terrace is conceived as a public space for the occupants as well as the city beyond.

The design of the space is conceived as a system of layers or layering of systems. The first is the insertion of an infrastructure piece that acts as a flexible frame. This frame behaves as an organizing grid for the required activities / functions that need to be incorporated within the space. The frame primarily carries electrical conduits that lends to the dimension of the custom fabricated channels. The channels work as a modular system, and their built-up sections allow for intersections in the x/y/z axes. Further the flexibility of the system is tested through the way other objects attach themselves to the frame. Sometimes resting or slipping past or getting fastened, following and sometimes breaking the grid.
