The prevalent urbanization process across Vietnam has been causing an imbalance in rural areas. The area of agricultural land is decreasing, seriously affecting the sedentary farming and resettlement of the community.

The house is located in Vinh Ngoc commune (Dong Anh), which has a close connection with the water surface of Phuong Trach lake, Hai Boi lake, and the Red River. This location generates the idea of creating a House from the Flow – an expression of commonly found residential agglomerations along rivers (horizontally) or along waterfalls (vertically).

Floating Bamboo House is a housing model for Vietnamese locals whose livelihoods are river-based, especially those in the Mekong Delta. It is a new type of three-compartment house made of solid cored bamboo (diameter d = 3-4.5cm, 3m and 6m long) which are joined together simply with latches and ties.

The house is in a newly developing urban area in Phu Ly City (Ha Nam province). Since this area is supposed to have graves deep underground (due to its proximity to the former cemetery), it is, therefore, necessary to excavate the old soil layer before construction to clear the above-mentioned assumption. This perspective then helps develop the concept of making use of the excavated site as part of the house (after the old soil layer is removed) so that not only distinguishable special features are created but also the possibility to harness geothermal energy is made.

The house is located in a suburban commune of Hanoi which has undergone a rapid process of urbanization. It is designed in a philosophy that it will help shape a place similar to the natural environment in an artificial manner. The proposed structure of the house resembles that of a Cave. The overall structure is made up of and enclosed by two layers of brick wall meeting one another at an intersection, with alternate ‘green’ arrangements of plants and vegetables. Bricks have long been a familiar local material and widely used in rural areas of Vietnam with a simple manual construction method.

Located in the center of BacNinh city, the house can accommodate an extended family of 4 generations. Its design is inspired by light and space effects, which resembles the "cave" style in a humid subtropical climate to bring about positive and vivid experiences to users’ senses: low (at the entrance), wide and high (inside), narrow (nooks and crannies), open outwardly (door system); even light distribution (outside), gradual darkening (inward), streams of light (from above), alternating vegetation, etc.

75% of Vietnam's population now lives mainly on agricultural production in rural areas; however, rapid industrialization and urbanization in the past 20 years has resulted in a loss of millions of hectares of agricultural land, leaving nearly three million workers unemployed. In the meantime, the country's population has increased by more than 15 million people, which results in a high housing demand. This has then entailed massive waves of construction and sprawl land encroachments in rural areas and from other vulnerable communities. As a result, the living environment and natural habitat in these areas have been seriously contaminated and impaired, thus gradually disrupting the relationship between Humans and Humans and between Humans and Nature in the context of increasingly severe climate change.
