João's House is a renovation project for a small house located in the old part of the city of Porto, close to the Douro River. It is a traditional XIX century ground floor building with walls made with stone, and a wooden roof structure covered with tiles. It was once used as a bakery that served the local population who were mostly fishermen.

The house is built in the north of Portugal, in a rural settlement that was established at the foot of the hill and expanded towards the plain, which is used as arable land and extends to the sea. The land is separated from a chapel by a walkway, and it is located at a lower level. It is long (about 60 x 18m), and there is a gentle slope. The chapel stands on a base of granite walls with its entrance facing west, and it imposes itself in that area. Its presence had an influence on the project, particularly as regards the design of the volume, its implementation in the space, and the definition of the constructive details. The house sought not to disturb the harmony of this religious space. At the same time, it did not want to be submissive to its presence.

The Centipede is a Tea House in the Basílio Teles Garden, located in Matosinhos, the city where Álvaro Siza was born, in the North of Portugal. The garden stands in front of the beautiful City Hall building, designed by Arch. Alcino Soutinho in the late 80's. This, once, romantic garden of the ninetieth century is now the sum of continuous interventions with poor architectonic quality and obsolete urban equipment. When approaching the project, the first thing that came to mind was to recover the original garden design and demolish all the equipment that had been built in the last decades. That proposal was not approved by the city administration and the intention they had of making a building in the garden persisted.

All the conception process of the Valley House starts with the Valley without the house, or either, with the confrontation of the architect with natural space. I started defining intentions. The will to respect the local topography and to take the people, through the house, to cover and to usufruct 10.000m2 of available area had been the first ones to appear. I wanted a proportionate volume in relation to the land. The idea of one lost object in the vast space did not please me, so I came up with a long and compact element embedded in the ground.
