The House as a Shelter
How can a dry, rocky, steep-sloped terrain be confronted by architecture? That’s the initial question that arises out of the necessity to build a household and a work atelier in this type of setting. As an answer, we decided to intervene as little as possible with the land’s topography, as a means to balance excavations and fillers, solving the problem with a simple outline, with sections and planes.

Background
The “Plaza Biblioteca Sur” project adheres to the objectives that the municipality has previously proposed such as increasing both the quality of life and community development, with projects that enrich values through education, recreation, and culture. It is essential to highlight that this project took around eight years of management, transitioning through different Mayors, valuing the spirit of continuity without placing the political party of the authorities into importance. The project rose due to the different exchanges with the local neighbors and the municipality, perfecting its program according to their necessities. Even now, with the library fully working, we are still collecting suggestions that search to accommodate the neighbor’s most recent necessities. The community is enthusiastic and is eager to participate in several activities to promote coexistence. It is an enriching, active and dynamic experience.

We understand that all architectural experience is multi-sensorial and embraces qualities of matter and not matter, of the closed and open space, of accurate or ambiguous space, of textures, reflections, of the human scale among others. We were interested in exploring processes where mass and light became the raw material for building a timeless container, which embraces a specific program and enters into direct communion with the site.

Background
The municipality sought to reverse the neglect and danger that had taken root in the neighborhood through cultural promotion in this and other parts of the district. In response, the strategy was to preserve a few abandoned lots adjoining public parks by activating a creative process that involved park users, neighbors, the municipality and the environment. The project explores a silent, hidden architecture in order to build a social landscape that adds a proper, timeless and aesthetic sensibility to everyday life. In this manner, it sought a place of encounters, reflection, joy and wonder in a setting that blends with nature. The design materializes sensations, creates dreams, wishes and honors the craft of construction with local handwork adapted to new, contemporary experiences. It creates and contains a pause from a dizzying world within a space whose raw materials are defined by mass and light.

The premise in the development of this project was to always keep the views of the bay and the horizon present in every area of the house. We needed to place the program so that the spaces would connect visually, the transparency should be the primary axis of the first floor.

The Project is located in an existing condo in La Planicie, overlooking the Golf. Importantly, one of the family members is disabled, so the project should not have any barriers and integrate the lives of others, without altering the aesthetics and function. All in equal conditions. The project is articulated through a 1.50 axle wide circulation, containing all functions in two volumes. The first volume, a strip running the length of the field, adding a second volume containing double height social area and expansion of the terrace. The concept of the house was looking for a functional integration, structural and formal, with a simple modulation responding to the program. The proposed materials synthesized warmth and formal language of the project, creating a comfortable home.

The concept of this house was born by very clear requests from customers. The principal were trying to keep and cherish as much green space and use low maintenance materials. It was a very rewarding process that turned into a special feeling called Space and Matter.
