The house is located in Kummelnäs, near Stockholm. The cottage from 1850 had been used as a summer retreat since the 1960's. It was in bad condition, but with an intact timber log structure on a robust stone foundation. Its 60 sqm in one level was transformed in a hasty renovation in 2006, including raising the roof, into 90 sqm in two storeys. The original building was given a new life in a traditional style. The whole facade and its detailing, as well as all windows were painted with a gray linseed oil paint.

Sauna / General Architecture

The small building is built as a uniform volume, clad in larch wood. When not in use the house is completely closed, giving it an appearance of the archetypal house. When open, the warm un-weathered finish of the larch gives the sauna a friendly and welcoming character.

This unusual roof addition sits atop a private villa in Stocksund, Stockholm, Sweden. The structure is formed by three equal-sized square rooms, that substitute the previous existing pitched roof. Each room contains big window panes and skylights opening the spaces to the nature outside.

We found a small granary for sale outside Borlänge, in the Dalarna region of Sweden. It was a modest construction in design and dimensions, but expressed an uncompromising constructive attitude that interested us: Timbering as pure tectonics, materialized as a precise joining of individual elements that form a coherent unity.
