The Staten Island Animal Care Center creates a humane and controlled environment for animals awaiting adoption. The heart of the design is a reversal of the typical arrangement of animal care facilities: animals are housed around the perimeter of the building while offices and service functions are placed in the interior. Since the staff spends most of its time with the animals, this arrangement benefits both.

Hurricane Sandy made landfall with a thirteen foot storm surge and winds of over 80 miles per hour. It devastated the coastline of New York City and destroyed thousands of homes and other structures. While the event was catastrophic, it alerted the public to the urgency of building intelligently in flood zones and of designing to mitigate the causes and effects of global warming.

Garrison Architects approaches projects through a process of extensive research that responds to the current economic, cultural, technical and environmental challenges. The firm integrates this critical approach with a highly refined modernist aesthetic. The Koby Cottage exemplifies this process. The recipient of a New York AIA Architecture Merit Award, Koby Cottage is a guesthouse for families visiting their children at Starr Commonwealth, a nonprofit organization in Michigan that counsels troubled teens. The cottage allows families to come together in a private domestic setting surrounded by nature.
