The house is located in what was once the Cortijo de las Peñas area, north of the city of Loja and at the foot of Mount Hacho. Today, it sits in a residential development—an extension of the city—that lacks any of the aesthetic qualities typical of architectural design.

In 2017, the Port Authorities of Motril announced a contest for the new Headquarters of Port Operations of the National Police in order to control the activities carried out in the harbour. The proposed location between fishing vessels a few meters from the Mediterranean is strategic as a control point. This position together with the proximity of groundwater makes the design a sum of architectural and energy-related decisions with the goal of achieving a building with zero energy consumption. Formally, a strategy of sealing the corners and opening the interior spaces is chosen, with a system of courtyards that act as thermal regulators and contribute to the light quality and permeability of the interior.

The project is clearly conditioned from the beginning by the topography and morphology of the plot and arises from the transformation of those limits in its virtue. The topography descends sharply in two directions and the morphology of the plot that closes outwards and opens inwards, leaving a minimal front for the development of the façade. In addition to the strict design standards, some uses are required, such as the concierge, common spaces or the Parent-Student Association. The building needs to be attached to the only point of contact with the main road with the maximum possible area. That explains the morphology in "U" form. The building is implanted next to the only current access of the plot, developing the entire educational program in a compact volume at the top, leaving the rest of the land for outdoor spaces.

How to face the construction of a home with a small plot of land enclosed between walls, whose only façade faces north? This is the starting point of a project which, due to its complex answer, is based on simple premises. The project begins by dialoguing with tradition: The idea of building a courtyard house with contemporary style and language arises. The centrality of this type of housing allows the permeability of space and light, giving a feeling of amplitude that contrasts with the original size of the plot. The courtyard acquires its contemporary nature thanks to the chosen materials, concrete and reed, which use light to sift their textures and materiality.

Brácana always wanted its own church. The people from this district in Illora’s township (Granada, Spain), historically added since the Catholic Kings’s time to the Davila’s lineage (later Counts of Guadiana), were always spiritually assisted in outside temples of the village, either for their provenience to other urban centres like the nearby village of Alomartes, or their private character, case of the only religious building of the town: the particular oratory, then private chapel (1891) of the ancestral Lord D. Luis Dávila Ponce de León (IX count of Guadiana), restored by his heirs in 1940.
