Offering exceptional views of the Pacific Ocean and its surrounding natural landscape from every point on the site, Breakthrough Properties’ Torrey View Development works in tandem with its environment to express its own character while echoing the site’s layered geologic formations in its coffered façade. The steeply graded window panels establish its dynamic, tessellated signature envelope. Seeking to create flexible, daylight-infused interior floor plates that maximize energy efficiency, digital tools were employed to assist in massing, placement, and façade development. The interiors promote occupant wellness by providing natural daylight and views without compromising building performance.

Ascendium Education Group partnered with Flad Architects to establish Ascendium’s headquarters in a new three-story office building on the north side of Madison, Wisconsin. Ascendium is a nonprofit organization that helps borrowers repay student loans and provides additional solutions to make education and training beyond high school a reality for more people. Ascendium’s goal of elevating opportunity is reflected in the building’s dynamic design, which gives the impression that it is rising from the landscape, poised to take flight.

Representing the UW-Milwaukee campus’ first new academic building in more than a decade, the Kenwood IRC houses academic and research space for STEM disciplines, provides space for the chemistry department including the Shimadzu Laboratory for Advanced and Applied Analytical Chemistry, serves as the new home for the physics department and includes labs for the Zilber School of Public Health. But its presence is being felt throughout the campus because of how it is sited and the way it is being used by so many different students.

Busch III Brewing and Food Science Laboratory (WBF) complete the Robert Mondavi Institute for Food and Wine (RMI) for the University of California – Davis. The 31,000sf design-build laboratory complex was completed in 2010 and is formally influenced by the agricultural structures of the California countryside, serving as a learning environment for viticulture, brewing, and food processing.
