The valleys of Northern California bear the imprint of waters that flow down from its mountains, forming rivers that release into the sea. This valley is one of these valleys. Located in a 27-square-mile watershed, the valley is drained by the eponymous creek, a tributary of the Russian River. Each year, the river supplies water for the region’s rich agricultural lands and sustains the regional ecology that includes the City of San Francisco. Hot dry summers in this part of the world give way to seasonal rains. In summer, the creek is nearly waterless while, during winter, the river triples in volume, nourishing the flood plain. Rainwater provides moisture and essential nutrients to the crops that cover the valley floor.

When a young couple with a growing family wanted to take a step back from the city, they found an old vineyard parcel in Napa Valley that looks out towards the Mayacamas. On that site, Field Architecture designed a house that makes room for both small and large gatherings where the family can spend time connecting with the land and with one another. The property sits on the valley floor, the only vertical moment a line of tall trees in the northeast corner. Field nestled the home — designed as a family of structures — between the trees, leaving a courtyard space in the center and filling it with a luxuriously modern pool. A grand valley oak marks the central axis threading through the building.

Forty-One Oaks / Field Architecture

There are forty-one oaks within this Portola Valley lot. They lie within the boundaries, dotting the rolling hills and shading the ground with their canopy. The clients, a couple retired from corporate careers and now immersed in their passion for photography, wanted the home to feel like a continuation of the landscape; they hired Field Architecture, a firm with a long history of designing homes that act in conversation with their site.

Ubuntu Centre / Field Architecture

The Ubuntu Center provides pediatric HIV testing and treatment, counseling, education, and community empowerment. The design is focused on de-stigmatization and normalization of HIV testing and treatment. It provides access to a state-of-the-art facility in a beleaguered post-apartheid community. The design is a model for sustainable development that begins with environment and extends to the preservation of life.
