In this project, I had to deal with a pre-existent cattle shed/warehouse/barn from the early '900. Past generations built this building with sacrifices for the sustenance of their family, so to me, it was necessary to take this into account, preserving as much as possible both from the point of view of materials and form. I believe that in the historical moment we are experiencing there is a need to revive buildings like this, to renew their history, to give back “life” to the materials of the past. On the external façades, the plaster was kept as it was, while inside it was completely removed from the walls, bringing back to light the original stone. About the roof, both the supporting structure and the chestnut wood paneling and the covering layer in rusty corrugated sheet, have been maintained through recovery and restoration.

The sense of uncluttered minimalism of Casa G makes visiting this bespoke home in northern Italy a truly relaxing experience. Its architect, Sondrio based Italian Alfredo Vanotti, admits to aiming to create a space that felt calm and in touch with the outdoors, like an ‘inhabited terrace’, he says. When his client approached him for a house on a beautiful spot among vineyards, in a historical town on the Rhaetian side of the Alps, the architect jumped at the opportunity.

This house is located in the surroundings of Sondrio on the Orobic Alps at about 1000 meters of altitude. The customer requests were to transform an existing ruin, realized in bricks of concrete, into a residence, that had the most solar radiation and lighting in the livingroom and, at the same time, a view toward the bottom of the valley. In those circumstances, after a careful analysis of the context, of the possibilities in terms of exposure, of the study of the sunlight and the study of technologies and of the values of the mountain architecture, I realized the project through a reinterpretations, in a modern key, of the construction techniques and materials used in the past.
