CRA House / Estudio MMX

The CRA House is located within a residential country club in Avándaro, Estado de México. The country club, like many others in Mexico, establishes general design criteria and suggests, with emphasis, the use of specific forms and materials. Given the mountain character of the site, the regulation infers the need to preserve the rustic character of the place through architecture. In most cases, regulatory constraints are real challenges that are solved through analysis and design. In this case, the design of the house proves a stylistic hybridization strategy, with the double purpose of giving continuity to the character of the whole, while at the same time articulating, in an alternative way, the different spaces and the program of the house.

The building is located in a quiet urban environment which stands 1000 feet (300 meters) away from Bosque de Chapultepec, the biggest park in Mexico City. The project has a semi-basement and three floors that hold three 3400 sq. ft (320 sq. m) residences.

This project, located west of Mexico City, experiments with the diversity of environments experienced when walking through it. For its design we considered wide open spaces to complement the distant views and interlock with the closed and intimate spaces, in sequence, designed to to enjoy the change of scales, heights and chiaroscuros of the site and the house.

The plot´s terrain had an impressive descent of 16 meters (52 ft) within its limits. On the bottom, a ravine with a dry creek offers a level of intimacy and contact with nature unmatched by the conditions at street level. The project´s main objective was to reach the lowest point of the terrain. The house needed a sequence of varying levels that translates onto a subtle descent parallel to the natural context.

The CVC House is generated from the articulation of the garden´s exterior spaces, terraces and the central patio with the spaces that were required by the client, as a way to generate a dialogue between the built space and the open space. In addition to a sequence of open spaces with varying degrees of intimacy, that allow to pass gradually from the large space of the street to the green space at the back of the plot.

The design explores the traditional type of housing in Colonia del Valle, where the corners of the buildings are cut away, creating a wide street centre. Taking advantage of the space created in these intersections, the scheme is solved through a diagonal sequence of open spaces that go from the public to private.
