In 2015, Dany and Jenny founded the first artisanal brewery on San Cristóbal Island, in Galapagos: La Cervecería Endémica. The proposal sought to be sustainable, natural, and local; as much as possible, considering the limitations of an Island (resources and energy supply, transportation, etc.). After four years of work and with the arrival of their first child, the couple decides to build the first house of their own on a plot of land located on the urban edge of Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, one kilometer away from the coast. In the same way as in the brewery, they seek to build their home sustainable, local, and as sensitive as possible to the natural context of the Islands. The Endemic House, therefore, aims to be a simple, efficient house and prioritizes the use of the local workforce and materials. The limited budget represents an important challenge in terms of management and logistics.

The aim of the project is to design an independent apartment for one person, fully equipped and with a very limited budget. Consequently, two main strategies are used: a) limit the intervention to what is strictly necessary, taking advantage of the existing distribution and materiality; and b) allocate the available budget to materials, so that construction is solved, as far as possible, through mingas and self-construction.

Rosa and Jaime want a new country house, to enjoy nature on their plot of land in northern Quito. The dry landscape of Tanda has been modified through irrigation systems to allow for farming; an important family passes time. Besides this, Rosa and Jaime have kept some metal trusses (normally used to build temporary tents) that can be reused in the new house. These two conditions gave birth to the project’s first intentions.

Don’t throw anything away. That was the first request the client made for her new house in Guayllabamba, Ecuador. Patchwork and quilting are not only her work, but also her philosophy of life, so she tries to recycle everything she can. The second request was to find solutions for the house on one single level. This would allow comfortable access for her and her mother, who would also be her neighbor in an already existing house just a few steps away from hers.

The Retoños house belongs to a large extended family made up of several smaller families. The clients, Alvaro and María, wanted a house in which to bring together their 16 family members, including children and grandchildren. As a close-knit family, they get together very often. Until now, this took place in a small apartment in Quito, so they were looking for a quieter place far from the noise and drab environment of the city.
