“When the phrase ‘the trees prevent us from seeing the forest’ is repeated, its exact meaning may not be understood. Perhaps the mockery behind the phrase backfires on the person who utters it. The trees prevent us from seeing the forest, and thanks to that, the forest exists. The mission of the visible trees is to keep the rest latent, and only when we realize that the visible landscape hides other invisible landscapes do we feel ourselves to be inside a forest.”— Meditations on Don Quixote. Depth and Surface — José Ortega y Gasset (1914)

As time passes, architectural criteria adapt to the collective knowledge and qualities we consider fundamental. Although the focus of practice has evolved throughout the constant process of building the discipline, the main objective of architecture has remained the same since humans have extended their quest for inhabitation beyond the simple act of providing shelter, which is to elevate our existential relationship of being in the world.

The project intends to create a house using natural materials, with the presence of vegetation, natural light in all spaces, cross ventilation, and spatial amplitude, in the typical 12 x 30 meters lot in Asunción. The vertical elements are materialized through the use of conventional semi-pressed brick, allowing various forms of grouping. The filter of the facade facing the street intertwines privacy, facilitates the ventilation of the interior, and serves as a guide for the climbing plants that seek to colonize the facade and become the main element of the house.

“I got an order from the school board that said ‘We have a great idea. We should not put windows in the school because children need wall space for their paintings, and also windows can distract from the teacher’. Now, what teacher deserves that much attention? After all, the birds outside, the person scurrying for shelter in the rain, the leaves falling from the trees, the clouds passing by, the sun penetrating: these are all great things. They are lessons in themselves.” – Louis Kahn
