Located on the periphery of the University of Lausanne, the Vortex will house nearly 1,000 students and academic guests by the end of this summer. This iconic building was financed by the Caisse de pensions de l’Etat de Vaud and built by Losinger Marazzi, with IttenBrechbühl as an architectural director. The Vortex already welcomed the 1,800 athletes taking part in the Youth Olympic Games at Lausanne from 9 to 22 January 2020. «As soon as the client confirmed the contract placement, planning went into top gear and coordination was highly focused. We had 900 days to build 900 rooms.» (Guillaume Schobinger, project manager at IttenBrechbühl). Hosting the Youth Olympic Games gave a tremendous boost to the construction of this student accommodation facility.

The pedagogical guidelines of the primary school in Birmensdorf led to an innovative and unique architectural interpretation. The room sequence stimulates the interaction amongst the different classrooms and offers openness, flexibility and versatility during class. The rooms are visually and physically connected to a continuous learning landscape. The staggering volume allows each classroom to have an additional façade, increasing natural lighting and solar gains. This measure leads to a structured and small-scale interior, creates places of retreat, generates learning niches and gives the students a feeling of security without compromising overall orientation.

Dürig AG has won a competition to design a new Student Housing building for the University of Lausanne in Switzerland. Dubbed Vortex, the residential building will house 1,350 students and is also a candidate for the Athletes Village for the 2020 Winter Youth Olympic Games. For this reason, the design of the building includes a common path that spirals from the ground floor to the rooftop, creating a distinct social atmosphere that caters to students and athletes.

With its 10.2 ha total surface, the ’Heerenschürli’ in Schwamendingen is one of the three biggest sports grounds of Zurich. The increasing demand for sports facilities lead to a competition program for the reorganization and extension to twelve soccer fields, the creation of a baseball field, a substantially sized locker room building and a smaller housing for the maintenance facilities.
