The site is located three miles South of Mallaig, overlooking the White Sands of Morar, with the Small Isles of Rum, Eigg, Muck, and Canna as a scenic backdrop. Two traffic arteries in the middle distance, the West Highland Railway and the Road to the Isles, follow the contours of the coast, leaving the sloped site confined between the two, in both position and datum. The endeavor of making the area accessible has left its traces, as excess excavations have been dumped on adjacent land, now mostly overgrown by dense vegetation and trees which form the foreground of the plot.

Our clients, a family of 5 came to us with a site and a sketch which described their brief. The site is an elevated bare croftland site with views over Dunvegan bay to the Waternish peninsula. It has long views to the north to Isle of Harris and south towards Dunvegan. To the west is a wooded cliff.

The site is located in North West Skye, overlooking Loch Dunvegan. It manifests itself as a contradiction: far reaching views to the North East and harsh winds from the South West. The constant is the horizon.

This multi-award winning house has been inspired by the vernacular Scottish blackhouse, but abstracted in to modern architecture. The client inherited the croft from his mother, and he wanted to build a home that connected with the landscape and the local heritage.

Previously the village hall of the Isle of Raasay, on the Scottish west coast, was housed in the west wing of Raasay House, a nearby mansion historically owned by Clan Macleod. Anyone wishing to attend a concert, talk or ceilidh had to be able to climb 2 flights of stairs and withstand the cold.

They love the landscape and positively enjoy the unpredictable weather and choose to eat outdoors in all seasons. They brought to us photographs of their main home which is simple and minimal, a CD of their favourite music and the encouragement to do something different.
