Once the Black Sea was a landlocked sea for the Greek civilization, which generated a lot of fascinating architectural structures. One of such ancient typologies has become a prototype for the Super Patio residence. A museum of history and ethnography in Prymorsk, a small Crimean town, exhibits an exciting reconstruction of development from a Greek colony in Eastern Crimea: it is a combination of a citadel and a freestanding residence with a patio. In its first original version, the Super Patio residence used to have an inner terrace and a swimming pool.

According to the legend, Kyiv is a city built of seven hills. One of them is Tatarka – a historic neighbourhood in the city centre which forms a narrow meandering hill between Podol and Lukyanovka. The plot where a single-family house is going to be built is located right on this hill and it can only be reached from Nagornaya street by means of taking a narrow side street down the hill, which leads to a distinctive amphitheatre-like valley. We used this landscape feature in the creation of a living environment, locating the main volume on the point of the best possible perception of the whole territory. The main living space is raised and has a connection with the whole plot along its perimeter.

For us, it was a new unusual experience of thinking within the framework of a different ergonomic system. Our main goal was to make the animals happy by providing them with all possible conveniences: a spa infrastructure (with a shower, a sun parlour and specialized grooming staff), training arenas and sports equipment, climate control and an audio system.

The construction of Teart na Podole started back in the 90s and has remained abandoned ever since until recent private initiative has come into play. The newly-proposed renovation project suggests considerable changes to the previous building. Its functional character has undergone significant transformations as the theater has evolved from an exclusive “palace” into an inclusive public space. Almost the whole layout scheme has been altered, together with most of the levels, which has greatly simplified the interaction between the theatre itself, its guests and the city. The fly loft and the stage are the only volumes that have remained intact.

Much in the same way as flat steppe, the homogenous dendrology of the forest is far from being a simple setting for developing a scenario. Therefore, as long as we define the forest as an “occupied” place, we introduce the empty space of the peristyle as an “antithesis” to it.

The plot is situated on the edge of a steep plateau and occupies the borderline position in the row of houses. This position invited a plentiful of interpretations of open and closed spaces. The combination of two volumes was arranged in such a way so as to allow an uninterrupted sightline between the sea and the house situated behind our plot. The location of the house itself was largely determined by the desire to preserve as many of the existing trees as possible. Another important factor was the necessity to create a harmonious interrelation between the house, the garden and the sea view. These three environments are placed each along its own line and they interact in a variety of ways, depending on the position of the observer (whether it is the garden, the house or the mirador).
