A school made of wood, shadow, and light and a positive-energy building with a low carbon footprint to promote the circular economy. In most of our school buildings, wood is omnipresent to create a light, warm atmosphere conducive to learning and a sense of togetherness. This is the case also for our D’Orlinde Middle School in Bretenoux. Situated on the junction of two communes, shaping a public square, it shall help to revitalize this area, currently changing. The single-storey building is reminiscent of the regional medieval bastides and thanks to the chosen materials, it is naturally embedded in its rural surroundings. Nonetheless, it offers a touch of urban flair at the entrance to the village.

On the edge of a densely built residential area in the Allgäu hills, we created a well-conceived wooden house for a variety of uses. The adjacent popular recreation and landscape conservation area prompted us to incorporate the surrounding nature into the design of the house. The new building follows the proportions of the desolate existing building from the 1960s. The staggered storey set back from the street communicates with the slope, whose original steepness we have restored. The restrained, horizontally structured architecture with a façade made of local wood blends harmoniously into the natural surroundings. Floor-to-ceiling glazing, visual axes and open living spaces that offer numerous views stage nature and bring it into the house.

The elementary school provides an ideal educational facility for modern pedagogic approaches. It is an uncompromising example of cluster design offering a flexible and nurturing learning environment. In an elegant, one-story wooden structure, four identical teaching clusters are situated around a top-lighted lounge with a raised roof. The flat building blends harmoniously into the environment of single-family houses. The schoolyard in front of the auditorium is connected to the Unterdorf path network. Local residents can use parts of the outdoor areas and sports facilities.

The architectural concept of the Christian-Bucher-Gasse elementary school, which dates back to the 1950s, combines the existing structure with the new buildings into a harmonious, functional school complex with a large, protected inner courtyard. 17 additional classrooms, a sports hall, a gymnasium, recreational classes, media, and workrooms plus a cafeteria have increased the student capacity by one-third to 425 children. The construction work was carried out in four phases so as not to interfere with the ongoing function of the school.

With this in mind, we and the client pursued the goal of bringing this scenery into the house and making it a tangible experience. A 36-meter-long glazed beam with an external graphite-grey steel structure floats 12 meters above the massive base, cantilevering freely. On the street side, the garage with storage and technical rooms is pushed into the slope.

This was once the site of the Montfort, a hotel built in Bregenz in 1877 during the Gründerzeit era. In 1921, architect Willibald Braun erected an adjoining and historicizing building with a neo-classicist façade for the Provincial Parliament of Vorarlberg. The hotel, the “Graues Haus” (grey house), served as an administration building to the Provincial Government. Between 1981 and 1984, after the construction of the new parliament, it was replaced by a postmodernist office and commercial building with an inclined roof. The building is linked to the city centre via a diagonal passage. Extensive refurbishments, to be completed by 2008, will once again redefine this part of the city.

New pedagogical concepts ask for new architectural forms. To transform the elementary school in Edlach into a contemporary cluster school, the new building arranges the master classes and group rooms as small units and offers a wide range of spatial configurations. The circulation space is reduced to a minimum.

The multi-functional sports hall is timber-frame constructed with straw insulation and forms a neighborhood hub in the heart of Bon Lait, an urban development area in the Lyonnais district of Gerland. The hall is available to both the primary and secondary schools as well as to local clubs and sports enthusiasts, and is a social meeting place for the locals throughout the week. The allocation plan consists of a triple gym for various ball sports and a training hall for martial arts, dance and gymnastics.
