Rua de Pinto Bessa, located on the eastern edge of the city of Porto, was planned at the end of the 19th century as a structuring road that could connect the consolidated city to the new main train station of the city, Campanhã. Due to its importance, its generous profile aspired the construction and densification in height of the two fronts. This housing block aim to respond to this urban intention. Occupying an awainting plot of land at the street, it extends along the entire length of the plot, taking advantage of the height defined by the visible buildings and creating a new facade metric that respects the vertical proportion of the surrounding buildings.

The project started with the challenge to transform an underground garage in Porto downtown into an office space for several companies. At a first glance, the space did not seem to be the most obvious choice for architectonical adaptations. However, by taking advantage of the building’s spatial and formal characteristics, the design manages to embody the roughness of the garage space working with it as an outer shell and creating a new interior living area.

The pavilion uses both the Museum building and the Serralves Park as its raw material, each one in a different scale. Firstly, the pavilion’s design establishes an indirect relationship with the Museum building. The pavilion’s design is a polygon extracted from the Museum’s layout, corresponding to one of its characteristic spaces — the bow window — whose classic hexagonal matrix is repeated and emerges at various times throughout the Park, both in the pavements and the landscape features.

From the old and dark original house, the proposal kept and took advantage of the solid granite perimeter walls and the wooden roof structure that along with a selective demolition process created a new fluid and bright inside space. From the exposed rock wall a new rocklike volume is built in concrete, organizing the space and the public/service circuits and areas.

The creation of Pinhel's Cultural House allowed the rehabilitation of the city's old Bishop's Palace, a building of the eighteenth century, that had undergone countless changes during the last decades to accommodate several different programs, such as Military and Police Headquarters, School and Student Residence. The project proposal reinterprets the evolutionary history of the building and attempts to constitute another important step in its long history. Without any prejudice or fear, the proposal balances between the assurance of permanence of the original matrix of the building and the injection of a new dignity in its disfigured and misfited interior layouts.
