New life at Franz-Josefs-Bahnhof: Delugan Meissl Associated Architects (DMAA) and Josef Weichenberger Architects (JWA) transformed the terminus station and the office building above it under the name Francis from an impassable barrier in the centre of the district into a transparently permeable centerpiece of the new Althan Quartier. The decisive factor in the decision to convert, i.e., to demolish, redevelop, and add stories, was the significant impact on the ecological balance of the project. This meant that considerable amounts of CO2 could be saved.

After several conversions over the past decades, the building is now once again used as a residential home – in accordance with its original purpose. The historic exterior façade is listed as part of an ensemble with the neighboring buildings and was restored in close accordance with monument protection. In the process, the conservatory was also renovated in line with the original design.

DMAA’s design for the new headquarters of Sparkasse Bremen emerged from an invited competition for the development of a site, which is close to Bremen University – at the junction between Universitätsallee and the motorway access road – and offered few clues to designers regarding the shaping of the urban context and the building morphology. The seemingly reserved, standalone building volume defines the location through the inviting gesture of its transparent base, which opens to its surroundings on three sides in the form of full-height glazing.

The project was launched with the ambitious objective of transforming a former coal-mining area into a landscape park, which is not only a model for the landscape design that is so essential in China, but also contains a building infrastructure that can be used for researching into and offering people access to and information about natural ecosystems. The politically stated need to create high-quality leisure areas in or close to cities and to find ways of controlling the resulting large numbers of visitors formed the basis for the definition of a spatial programme. This envisaged not only the creation of the landscape park itself but also the construction of a central entrance building with a nature museum and administration facility, three greenhouses, a restaurant, a bonsai museum and a related research centre with a library and staff accommodation.

Not a medical institution in the conventional sense is provided in the northern side of the city, but housing for users who due to their age or illness are facing special spatial requirements. The guiding idea for the extension of the residential care home Donaustadt encloses a re-organisation of urbanistic conditions, which increases the use and quality of the surrounding public spaces.

The geometry of the Festival Hall developed from the topographical conditions, placing it in an adequate relationship with the existing Passionsspielhaus. The building’s form and positioning both relate to the impressive landscape setting defi ned by the rock formations in the back, and to the dynamic presence of its neighboring historical counterpart. This existing building and the new one are oriented towards one another. They complement and elevate their respective architectural articulation of the reference to the landscape by interacting visually with one another. The new building increases existing qualities of the natural and architectural environment. Aside from the geometry, colour also enhances the duality between old and new. While the white surface of the Passionsspielhaus stands out optically during the time of the summer festival, the changing of seasons brings upon a cromatic reversal of the ensemble. The confi guration of the Festival Hall resembles a tectonic stratifi cation. Its crevices and faults lying in between indicate the way into the building’s interior. At nighttime the incisions and folds in the distinctive façade allow insight into the radiant foyer.

The access area is set back from the road and constitutes an opening with visual reference towards the historic entrance gate. The two storeys solitaire develops from a basic rectangular shape. Its static, tranquil aspect is characterised by a rhythmically segmented façade. The overlay of the façade layers enters an inter play with the exterior, thus creating intense relationships between the landscape and the building’s interior. The transitional space between inside and outside is designed as a green and weather-protected courtyard. The path towards the main entrance is framed by temporary sample graves and stone masonry. An optical connection to the green exterior is generated by high glass panels which also transmit an atmospheric continuation of the landscape. The ample client area is divided into different functional zones which inter- sect seamlessly. The open space is structured by centrally located consultation desks and south-easterly oriented private niches are designed as discretion areas for personal care. The exhibition space for coffins and urns is located in the rear part of the ground floor area.

Film is an illusion created by the scenic coordination of light, space, and movement, which becomes real through projection. In architecture, the interplay between these parameters defines the intensity and effectiveness of the individual spatial perception significantly. They are understood to be integrative components of spatial enactment, their effect being projected through sequences of human motion and unfolded in multilayered ways.
