The region of Karst was once covered with Oak trees that Venetians have extensively used for building up the City on water. They have left the wind to peel off earth revealing limestone grounds. In this landscape the tradition of small, compact, stony and almost windowless houses developed and remained until today.

The empty and forgotten semi-basement space in the 19th century Ljubljana corner building, which faces the riverside and a rarely frequented stairs-street, housed diverse ventures in the past, from a local butcher shop to a wholesale wine store. Instead of a full list of technical requirements, we received our brief one Saturday morning in the form of a full course brunch, where the chef laid out the whole menu to be served in the future bistro. This delicious introduction helped us understand the identity of the food, the importance of its preparation and the complexity of the brunch ritual.

The design of the house is primarily based on the rules of local architecture. It respects the morphology of the traditional built context, referring to the prevailing gabled roof type of the house and respecting its volumetric and material parameters. On the other hand the Chimney house marks typological transformation generated by the users’ specificity.

The Cultural Center of European Space Technologies (KSEVT) will substantially supplement and emphasize the local cultural and social activities of the former Community Center in Vitanje, the town in Slovenia that was family home to Herman Potocnik Noordung, the first theoretician of space. The program includes additional cultural (exhibitions, events) and scientific activities (research, conferences) strongly connected to the phenomena of ‘culturalisation of the space’. The building features a series of interlocking rings that lie on top of each other to create a continuous ramped structure. The design integrates two buildings in one: a local community centre with a circular multi-purpose hall and local library and the museum of Space technologies with its exhibition and research areas. KSEVT will have a public significance and generate social, cultural, and scientific activities, with fixed and temporary exhibitions, conferences and club/study activities.

The houses on Perovo stand on an exposed location with an exceptional view of the Kamniško-Savinjske Alps in the background. However the view is not the only characteristic of this location, as the houses represent a dominant feature of the valley when viewed from below. Thus the architectural task at hand brings at least two important challenges. First, it is necessary to design and create a quality living environment for the future residents, and second, the project provides an opportunity to redefine the look of the settlement on Perovo which has a rather heterogeneous and inharmonious layout with its scattered individual houses.

The project consists of an immense production plateau and two small buildings on the edge of it.
