The 20th-century belt outside the historic center of Hasselt has been thoroughly transformed in recent years. Small, mostly run-down working-class and middle-class houses, on narrow plots and with limited heights, are making way for larger, collective housing projects. The increasingly strict energy performance and comfort requirements, the development toward smaller average household composition, and, above all, the need for densification of the city center, means that in many places - like here at Maastrichersteenweg - the typology of the single-family detached house is no longer tenable.

The main objective of the design is to create a site that naturally attracts visitors and encourages them to play actively. The interaction between visitor and museum was already unique in the folk sports barn. Another aspect that fascinates us as a designer is dealing with architecture and objects from the past, in a contemporary way.

Negenoord is a former gravel extraction area (about 150ha), which is now transformed to a nature reserve called Maasvalley Riverpark, 2500 hectares in size and located on both sides of the Belgium-Netherlands border which is formed by the Maas river. The redevelopment also gives more space for the river creating a flooding area.

As part of the city of Antwerp’s Land and Property policy, AG Vespa (“Autonomous Local Enterprise Real Estate and city projects for Antwerp”) purchases run-down properties in disadvantaged neighbourhoods and seeks, by regeneration or renovation, to provide positive incentives in and around the city centre to contribute to a better living environment. This project is located in the Lange Beeldekensstraat, near the De Coninckplein and Antwerp Central Station.
