On a large piece of land located a few kilometers outside of Nicosia, in an inhospitable and desolate landscape, the owners decide to build their "shelter". With no particular views, no neighbors, and not much greenery other than reeds along a dry ditch, the surrounding rural space does not lend itself to extroversion. Between city and nature, isolation and sociability, we are invited to create comfortable and safe living conditions in a completely hostile environment.

The project was inspired by the idea of Mediterranean scenery admiration towards the olive grove, vineyards, clear blue sky, breezy south to north orientation and seasonally changes throughout the year. The land and its environment together with the uneven topography of the site are taken as the structural principals in developing the concept of the house. Our proposal enhances the aesthetic character of the countryside and uses our intervention to nature as a backdrop to view the Mediterranean scenery. We designed a simple, strong silhouette to provide the setting to frame and enjoy the surroundings. What particularly drew our attention was the linearity of the plantation surrounding the plot. It seemed as though nature was calling on us to follow the linearity model of the landscape and be part of its ecosystem.

Cities are considered to be one of the major reasons for the many environmental issues we have today. Studies show that cities emit 60% more carbon that thought, in fact they account for more than 70% of the global CO2 emissions. With our garden house project we would like to emphasize how much potential there is for urban gardens and for the creation of microclimates which could improve the living conditions within cities and slow global warming.
