The restoration of Casernes was a project that aimed to showcase the history of the building and the modifications it had previously undergone throughout different eras. Gemma and Vicenç bought a row house that was divided into two separate dwellings – one located on the ground floor, and the other on the first floor, respectively. The building development planning had been very disjointed and, as a result, the building suffered from serious ventilation and lighting problems.

Hortes de Baix is a heritage irrigation space of 3.7Ha annexed to the historical center of Caldes de Montbui, a thermal city founded by romans near Barcelona. This space has suffered the gradual environmental and social degradation of its landscape. This characteristic process of the peripheral landscapes of the twentieth century is here mainly caused by the water pollution of the stream that supplies the irrigation system, the poor accessibility to the space and the breakdown of the irrigation community.

The project starts from the premise of dividing a big duplex, situated in front of the more distinguish park in the city, into two dwellings better adapted to a family’s present needs. At first sight, a visitor can get a sense of a stately home, possessing all elements and ambience characteristic of a superior dwelling, which give it such a special character. The challenge of this proposal is to achieve the recuperation of this generous space avoiding the loss of its previous character. The aim of the proposal is therefore to guarantee the conservation of all the elements that brought richness to the initial space and to obtain that the new architecture establishes a good dialogue between the new forms of living and the inherited legacy.
