The new Student Center for the University of Limerick, which is located in a significant site at the gateway to the campus, was generated by a vision for a place that is at the very heart of university life, transforming the social experience of the growing student population by providing social spaces, places for encounter and exchange of information, a center to support both students and alumni-a home from home, a place on campus that students can call their own. The project was first envisaged in 2015, when a student referendum was held following extensive consultation, to agree a levy that would effectively fund the development of the building.

Project Background/Context. The site is located on part of the previous Dominick Street flats complex on the east side of Lower Dominick Street, Dublin 1, at the junction with Parnell Street. The mixed-use development for Dublin City Council includes apartments and townhouses with a community center and retail space at street level. The six-story block along Dominick Street consists of a terrace of 6 apartment “houses” of 5 stories, providing 67 apartments over the ground floor community center and commercial space. A short terrace of 5 townhouses defines Dominick Place, a new street linking Dominick Street to Granby Place.

Two of the vaults now lining Henry street are the remains of an expansive terraced garden built in the 19th century that occupied the site. Replaced early in the 20th century by a courtyard complex of red brick buildings accommodating the General Post Office. This too was partially replaced in 2007, and the courtyard space replaced by a 5 storey concrete frame to be developed as a commercial office development. With the recession came stagnation, as the concrete frame and historic fragments were abandoned and turned to ruins.

A bold new addition to the town of Dún Laoghaire, Ireland is set to open on the 8th December: dlr LexIcon. Contemporary libraries now have an extended role within the local community, with the requirements of educational and cultural events shaping the design of the building and the spaces within. This building, the result of an RIAI international competition held in 2007, exemplifies this new approach to library design and offers a mix of intimate and expansive public rooms, places to congregate, or to sit quietly with a book and enjoy the view.
