The plot R11 is located at the northern end of the Highrise Village, bordering the park Cascina Merlata, the largest housing development in Europe. Initially planned as a volume surrounded by a fence and meant to be a ‘gated community, the architects proposed to break the plot into two parts to give back to the community a public space and create an urban door between the Village and the Park, the latter extending as a public square, inside the plot.

In 1857 the construction of the first seaside resort on the island of Lido in Venice was opening a stage of splendor for the island when parties, concerts, events were happening. The two major hotels: Grand Hotel des Bains, completed in 1900 and Excelsior Palace Hotel, in 1908 were transforming the island of the Lido in one of the most desired and sought-after seaside resorts in Europe. The Cinema Festival Palace and the Casino Palace were attracting huge numbers of tourists.

As architects and scholars, we recognize a political role in the urban realm for these small public spaces, where design is not aimed to produce objects standing independently, such as it happened with the cathedrals of consumerism (the shopping malls) or the cathedrals of culture (museums) which, despite their most private ownership, are considered the new public arenas of the society.

Inhabited infrastructure
The project is a winning entry of an international competition. The building is a graft in the complexity of the Venetian urban system facing Piazzale Roma, the car-entrance space to the city of Venice. At the same time it becomes the 'infrastructure' which brings an existing 19th century complex factory (Ex-Manifattura Tabacchi) to a contemporary use: in fact it houses the the technological systems serving the whole.
