Ulanqab Grassland belongs to a cultural context that is, by tradition, nomadic. No building is native here. The design challenge is threefold: avoid reducing the project to a cultural costume through symbolic copying; avoid the intrusion of imported urban architectural language; and on completely flat terrain, produce buildings that are both visually legible at distance and genuinely absorbed into the ground they stand on. BUZZ Architects answers with two buildings that establish opposite formal logics — one horizontal and embedded, one vertical and suspended — and through their contrast, frame the site.

Manor Mirage is located in the wilderness of Huai'an County, Zhangjiakou City, Hebei Province, adjacent to the Zhangbei Grassland. Its design core lies in the lightweight translation and functional regeneration of the abandoned concrete bridge on the site. With "mirage" as a metaphor, the project, on the basis of respecting the site memory and grassland culture, constructs a spatial form with both a sense of disappearance and transience through low-intervention strategies, realizing the dialectical coexistence of architecture and nature, tradition and modernity.

Perched at 3,600 meters on the Wunongding Viewing Platform east of the Meri Snow Mountain, the Poodom Deqin Meri hotel faces the sacred Thirteen Peaks of Meri, where a hundred-mile tapestry of snow-capped summits unfolds across the horizon. Framed by the Baima Snow Mountain at its back, it is cradled between two towering alpine ranges. To one side, a sheer valley plunges hundreds of meters down, nearly vertical, toward Deqin County.

The Jinshang OCC restaurant in Nanjing is located next to the Drum Tower, adjacent to cultural landmarks such as Nanjing University and Southeast University, bearing rich historical memories and urban emotions. The design team aims to redefine a comprehensive dining space through this project, combining the cultural depth of the site with contemporary lifestyles, making it a new landmark for the gathering of Nanjing's humanities.

The Longquan Mountain Observatory, a building at the highest point of Chengdu city, is intended to be a flowing element of the landscape. To achieve this, the design uses artificial means to engage in a dialogue with the vast scenery, so that the building does not rise abruptly out of the mountains, but rather appears as a rising surface, responding to the topography in a fluid way. The horizontal stance is above all a reflection of the landscape of the Chengdu Plain. It is composed of a series of horizontally oriented interfaces with different heights, which are in turn connected to each other in a continuous manner.

The MAHA HERmit Space is located within the central park of a high-end community in the core area of Beijing. It consists of three distinct areas "Islet Space," "Cave Space," and "Ravine Space." The original site was three independent sunken courtyards in the underground parking lot of the community. BUZZ, while preserving the special value of the site, redefined them through three different design approaches, endowing the space with a completely new experience. This redesign aimed to strengthen its community and landscape attributes to meet the demands of a contemporary art space functioning as a composite content hub.

The ChamberChurch aims to create a spatial container that both respects the past and looks towards the future. It shall provide a religious experience and secular touch. The lower part of the auditorium is divided into two parts: the semi-sunken space and the connected patio form a link to the surrounding landscape. It is embedded in the mountain and connected to the square. It is the hidden foundation on which the upper part of the auditorium can stand proud between the mountain and the water, reflecting the power of heaven and earth and spreading the gospel of creation. Looking backwards we find the archetypes of architectural associations in history. The design echoes the memories associated with them, but interprets them in a timeless modernity creating a sense of the future. The architecture integrates this duality in plan and section.

Chengdu, located in a wide plain, is a city that has historically been characterized by the broad expanse of flat land it is situated in. In recent years it has slowly started to embrace the mountains and foothills around it. At the core of that, the Shushan mountain with its misty and rolling shape has taken hold in people`s hearts. The Chengdu VUE Hotel and & Resort, designed by RSAA/Büro Ziyu Zhuang, forms a prominent public building in the new suburb “Tianfu Vanke City”. This new hotel, despite being in the city, is talking to, and immersing itself in the mountains. With this space, the hotel embraces the spirit of Shushan Mountain and expresses it in an architectural way.

The project, which is next to the tallest ancient landmarks of Beijing for more than 600 years – Drum Tower and Bell Tower- is adopted from a traditional Beijing-style courtyard; Siheyuan in Dongjiaogan Hutong.

The owner of this project Daniel Wu said, “Ziyu, look at this tallest tree survived in our village. It is beautiful. It should be seen in our house after rebuilt.” So we divided this residual wall into two parts; the middle part was used as a courtyard where we can admire the stars at night and the water from four directions can flow into it. The eaves divided the two ridges in different materials parallel to the mountains. The towering surviving tree and old village were included into our Tongling Recluse.
