Casa Verde Gago is located in the historic centre of Ansião and is the result of the renovation of an old building. This project has a contemporary feel that respects the memory of its historical context. At the same time, it is capable of reflecting an innovative approach, preserving the essence of the site, while establishing a dialogue between the past and the present, without compromising the historical identity reflected in the choices made during the design and construction phase.

Set within the heart of the village of Ansião, the focus of this project was the renovation of an old games room, that was part of a restaurant, Tarouca Gastro Bar. In its essence, the project aimed at giving the space a new dynamic that would give it a welcoming ambiance, not only for people going for a meal but also for relaxing and socializing. With this in mind, it was possible to include a space with tables, as well as a central area with sofas and a fire stove.

In the historic center of the village of Ansião, on a slightly sloped land, Casa Âmago emerges. The plot had two small houses in ruins, with no architectural interest, and as such, renovating them was not an option. However, it wouldn’t be in harmony with the surroundings to plan a contemporary house with no connection to the neighboring buildings. Thus, the first glimpse of this house does not give away what is beyond the wall and gate. A one-floor building, with a large central patio, the core from which the theme unfolds into all the other spaces and organization. “Âmago” means marrow, center, core, and focal point, and this central patio works as the main point of the house.

This project takes shape in the center of the village, in a place already known for its laundry services. A hall, which was previously non-existent, was built into the pre-existing space. The main idea is to separate the working and storage area, where employees spend most of their time, from the private area, and the entrance hall, the public space where customers are welcomed.

Our sight meets two distant architectures, separated not only by time, but also by the difference in its building approach. A symbiosis was sought between them, by respecting the existing house. This relationship was born so naturally that one is led to think that one could not exist without the other.
