Bellbird House / Bower Architecture

After a long search, our clients Cameron and Nicole found a property in the Bellbird Area of Blackburn, a classified National Trust area that has been protected against significant development since the 1960s. The Bellbird Area is a suburban bush setting, connected to the Blackburn Bush Corridor a critical habitat for birdlife and animals. The streetscapes retain a peaceful ambiance with no footpaths, dominated by native vegetation. The site featured 41 existing established native trees, all of which were preserved in the creation of this home nestled amongst, and suffused by the natural landscape.

After a long search, our clients Michelle and Peter found an ideal site to realize their vision for a house that would preserve a life of privacy and connection to nature (something they had enjoyed for forty years on the family farm), without the unsustainable workload. The brief for a timeless and tranquil home filled with natural light, warmth, and texture also prioritized accessibility and low maintenance to allow aging in place.

In a quiet street, this sensitive but tough new beach house creates an intriguing sanctuary, integrated with context and landscape. Driven by the local vernacular of gently gabled houses, a sensitive building form is nestled between its neighbours. Two entry experiences - the most apparent an informal outdoor shower which celebrates the ritual of the beach return, while a more discreet side entry leads into a central courtyard at the heart of the house.

An integral part of our philosophy is that the best design solutions come out of the most difficult spatial problems. The brief for the Corner House presented us with the requirement for a relatively large house and interior spaces on a medium sized site. The challenge was how to satisfy this brief with a contemporary sustainable house that connected to a quality outdoor space and resulted in an exciting external expression that was sensitive to its surroundings.
