Bar Beach is an inner-city suburb of Newcastle, Australia, An older house existed on the site however it was partially destroyed by an East Coast Low in 2015. The elevated site overlooks the ocean, is very exposed and the original building had not been built to withstand gale-force winds and horizontal rain. The site has expansive views of the ocean across a busy road to the East, and broad views of the city to the West. There are large houses on adjacent sites and the Northern neighbour blocks much of the site’s Northern sunlight.

Gerroa is a popular holiday destination, on the South Coast of NSW. The village is located at the Northern end of a long beach, adjacent to a lagoon, with the main streets running out along the South side of the headland. This particular site is above the road, and slopes up to the North approximately 5m in elevation. There are extensive views to the South down the beach, as well as a view across the lagoon to the Southwest. There are houses adjacent as well as houses in the foreground of the view. A large Radiata Pine tree existed on the site in the rear corner. The best views are from the level at the rear of the site.

This site, just behind the sand dunes of Diamond Beach on the mid north coast of NSW, is very flat and has a modest view over wetlands. The proximity of the ocean would enable a beachside lifestyle, however the house couldn’t access ocean views to provide the amenity. The design therefore needed to work in this context and provide the amenity from within. This is a holiday house for a large family, who frequently travel away with other families, so facilities for 10 – 15 people were required. A covenant on the land dictated that the house was to built using brick and tile.
