Meters away from some of Québec’s most spectacular landscapes is an unusual new glamping project. Reflection is the work of Québec-based Bourgeois Lechasseur / architects, who have developed a highly versatile approach to get-away rentals. They first experimented with the luxurious Charlevoix Domes, followed by the slightly nostalgic Cabin A. Reflection, their latest endeavor, is a set of two resolutely contemporary cabins in the woods.

La Frangine Residence / Bourgeois / Lechasseur architectes

Located next to the slopes at Stoneham Resort, La Frangine is the result of the expansion and conversion of a former ski chalet into the main residence. The architectural part of the project consisted of keeping the existing cottage and designing a second separate building connected to the first one. As a big sister, the new section looks after the smaller one. Both buildings nicely connect by means of a glass passageway which allows natural light into the heart of the residence. From its façade, the building echoes the dimensions of the original cottage but extends deeper into the deciduous forest. This creates an intimate deck located at the back of the house.

A major tourist attraction for well over a century, the Charlevoix region features some of Québec’s most striking landscapes. Over the last fifteen years, with the opening of a new ski resort, this already popular spot truly became a year-round destination. A wide range of tourist accommodation awaits visitors looking for scenic settings. A newcomer on the scene, Cabin A quietly opened its doors in December 2019 as it welcomed its first guests. Located 20 minutes from Le Massif ski resort, this unusual cabin stands on a steep site overlooking the nearby St Lawrence River.

Artists residence shines a light on Québec village. Centre Est-Nord-Est: contemporary architecture inspired by tradition. During the last three decades, the quiet village of Saint-Jean-Port-Joli known for its longstanding woodcarving tradition has been a rallying point for artists from various locations around the world. The Villa Vingt is anchored on a sloping site next to the ski resort Le Relais. The upper ground offers a magnificent view of the Laurentian hills and Lac-Beauport’s residential area. The project builds on the existing foundations of the client’s home in order to retain some acquired rights. The owners know the site’s qualities very well for having lived there many years. The project is inspired by the site and its accentuated relief. Level 1 acts as a base; it leans against the ground and opens up completely to the north. The upper floor seems to float above the concrete ground floor.

This house, whose name refers to the brightest star in the Aquila constellation, is located in Cap-à-l'Aigle, in the region of Charlevoix. Altaïr means "The Flying Eagle." What makes the house stand out is its "V" shape and long facades that are suspended over nature. While discrete from the street and closed to the north, it unfolds toward the river, as though to take flight.

At our first meeting, the clients spoke of simplicity and an open view of the woods. They wanted a house that "looks like a house." They preferred a more traditional style, reminiscent of East Coast homes by the sea, standing like cedar-shingled "lighthouses," standing strong against the storms. These houses seem to rise up to view the horizon. From the beginning, we could see that they were open to contemporaneity and boldness, even though they wished to retain the traditional country style of North Hatley's early homes. This duality between the traditional and the modern was our guide throughout the design.

The project is a complete remodelling of a ground floor apartment in a building dating back to 1924, located in Quebec City’s Montcalm neighbourhood. The clients, a young family, decided to convert the ground floor into their main residence. The space was remodeled to make it airy, bright and more functional. The living areas are spread out through a large linear area crossing the building from east to west. Now the light flows in more freely. During the demolition work, a brick common wall was seen as an element of interest to be kept and enhanced. At the other extremity, a wall of original wooden boards was also kept to provide a touch of warmth to the bedrooms.

The Grands-Jardins home is located in the Charlevoix region, specifically in Petite-Rivière-St- François, close to the Massif ski station. It sits on the mountainside on a rocky wooded site overlooking the St. Lawrence River. One of the major challenges of the project was to position the house so as to optimize the privacy and the views offered by the site. The home is built parallel to the street and at a slight angle so as to look out over the south and the river. From the inside, you feel you are in a ship’s cabin. As the house is located on a deep slope, passersby can see the top level from the street, while on the river side, three above-ground levels elegantly rise to reveal a façade interconnected by a play of angles and glass.

The Prémont Harley-Davidson is located in Québec. The complex measures nearly 8000 square metres and houses a large showroom, a museum that includes several collectors’ items, and a large repair shop. The program also includes a theme restaurant and administrative offices. The architectural part consisted of creating an iconic building, a landmark in the countryside. On the southern end of the site, the building culminates in a truncated tower, the upper part of which disappears in order to make room for the Prémont lantern which can now be seen at night like a lighthouse—a landmark visible from the highway and surrounding areas.

Cabane 217 is a project to completely redesign a home located in Ste-Catherine-de-la-Jacques-Cartier. The house is located on a wooded lot bordering the river. The owner wanted to give his home new life by opening it up to its surroundings. The changes also involved completely rethinking the living areas in order to create a dialogue between the outside and the inside. The basic premise consisted of preserving some of the building’s original country character and creating a contemporary project that is in harmony with its environment. The design followed a preliminary LEGO™ model created by the owner.
