The half-finished housing development is emblematic of Cambodia's aspirational economy. These iconic gated communities, known locally as 'boreys,' map out the expanding cities with the footprint of progress. Since the 2008 financial crisis stalled its initial iteration, Angkor Grace Residence and Wellness Resort is a prime example of how a borey development can evolve in a dynamic and challenging environment.

A NEW FRONTIER – Redefining Kep's Reclaimed Shoreline – The charming seaside city of Kep has long been a holiday destination for Cambodians and tourists. When the government initiated a plan to reclaim a 100m strip of land from the sea along its prized Western shoreline, the magic of the region appeared under threat. While the broad vision was for a public promenade along the entire coast, a local resort owner engaged us to design an ambitious private restaurant and recreation facility. Our challenge was to create an iconic building that honored Kep's environmental and cultural legacy, on the now barren, artificial landscape.

Bloom designed this collection of 3 small houses in 2019, with the aim to create a surprising green environment, a haven in disconnection from one of the most dynamic streets of Phnom Penh. Inside a colonial residential block, the project creates a sense of place by turning the challenge of accessing through a narrow alleyway into the opportunity to create a small residential community. It was critical to keep a village scale, a unique feature in the city center of Phnom Penh, hence the shapes of the houses were inspired by the preexisting vernacular wooden Cambodian houses sitting there.

Bloom Designs a School to Soothe the Mind of 1500 Cambodian Students in Phnom Penh - This 43 classrooms school was commissioned to Bloom in 2019 by the French Nongovernmental Organization “pour un sourire d’enfant” (PSE) to structure and modernize a campus of 7000 students. PSE is a NGO started shortly after Cambodia reopened its border in 1995 in the aim of providing Cambodian kids living in the dump of Steung Meanchey a chance at education. Since recent times the campus faces issues linked to a rapid development of its surroundings. The escalating real estate prices is causing the necessity for more efficient land use while the lack of storm water management in the surrounding is provoking recurrent floodings. Bloom was commissioned to develop a scalable strategy to densify the campus to an acceptable maximum.

Amber Kampot is a resort project undertaken by Bloom in early 2018. In the context of an Asian mangrove at the foot of the magnificent Bokor Mountains, Bloom investigates a Kampot-specific luxury retreat that would delve into the Cambodian culture. Curated for the modern traveler, contemporary villas are inserted organically like local fisherman villages as the resort paths meander.

This refurbishment of a historical shop house in decay is located on the riverside of the sleepy colonial town of Kampot, Cambodia. It investigates the adaptation of a south east Asian typology to the more contemporary customs, such as of tourism and modern lifestyle. The main concept was to introduce the notion of preservation and importance of endangered colonial center with an innovative approach to showcase the transform of an old shophouse into a 320 sqms of modern residence with a restaurant on ground floor.
