Keep House is where a couple lives, work from home, and raises their two teenagers. Their corner block is a wedge shape, its rounded edge facing a park across the street, its back garden culminating in a triangle. The block is elevated from the street, placing it on view all along its extensive street frontage and from the park. They needed a house that would connect the parkland and garden to the family, yet guard their privacy on the inherently visible site.

Set within a relatively recent subdivision upon the side of Mt Martha, the Split House negotiates a complex range of conditions typical of emerging coastal developments. New houses for ‘downsizers’ in a suburban mode, paved driveways and letterboxes prevail, vying for the expansive views to Port Philip Bay, and backed by the relatively wild, coastal woodland of Mt Martha Public Park. Construction works are ongoing in the area; completed houses with gardens at varying stages of maturity are punctuated by empty lots cleared of all vegetation.

It is estimated that driver fatigue is a factor in 20% of deaths on Victoria’s roads each year. In response to this VicRoads has developed a Victorian Rest Area Strategy which aims to reduce fatigue-related incidents by taking a holistic, strategic approach to the provision of rest areas across Victoria’s major roads. A key objective of this strategy is to provide interesting and engaging architecture to encourage drivers to stop and recuperate - to create places of interest beyond their utilitarian functions, with areas for people to eat and for children to play.

The Australia Gardens Shelters were an opportunity to engage with one of the nation’s most unique landscape projects. This is Australia's only botanical gardens to feature solely Australian native plants. Rather than present a collection of plantings in a ‘museum’ type setting, the landscape is designed, reinterpreted and presented under a conceptual framework that is posed as a transition from the relatively unoccupied interior to the more constructed coastlines. In contrast to most Architectural commissions, the architecture responds directly to the landscape context both conceptually and physically. In fact, the landscape was most completed when the architectural process began. The designs for the structures explore notions of what shelter is and the history of shelter from its most primitive forms to the more contemporary vernacular. 5 shelters were commissioned and three completed this initial phase.

On an elevated site set amongst native bushland with rolling hills to the north, the Great Wall of Warburton withholds views upon approach, presenting a mute block wall embedded into the site. This wall further explores our interest in how a line drawn becomes a wall that acts to claim space or mark territory. At this point you are still denied the view. Passing through this wall via the compressed point of entry, the panorama is suddenly revealed to the viewer; and further heightened by the dramatic angled ceiling. The interior face of the wall acts as a constant, omnipresent anchoring device as you move through the house. It is visible from every space. Each space unfolds from one to the other as the wall shifts in plan. This unfolding of space is subtle and yet dramatic as you journey through the house.
