Batten House is a new family home and studio in Curtin, ACT, adjacent to the Yarralumla Creek open space network. The project responds to its highly visible location next to a public cycle network and to beautiful southern parkland views. The design response is primarily driven by three key objectives. The first is the need to respond to the proximity of a public park and cycleway, the second is the prospect of adjacent southern parkland, and the third is the need for sustainable design outcomes.

The project comprised the design of a new single-storey house in the northern Canberra suburb of Turner, close to the city centre and the University precinct. The building forms a "U" shaped plan with an internalised large central court. The internal planning wraps the central court with a parents' zone on the northern side, a living spine along the west, and a children's zone along the south. This layout provides the desired privacy from the public realm, but allows for open and generous views from living spaces into the central court.

The project comprised alterations and additions to a 1950’s “Tocumwal” cottage in Canberra’s Inner North. The original cottage was relocated to Canberra from a former military intelligence base built during WW2 in the southern NSW town of Tocumwal. It is one of a number of heritage-listed examples of the Tocumwal housing typology remaining in Canberra. The original cottage was retained and refurbished, with minor modifications made to the rear of the house to accommodate a connection through to the new buildings.

This new house is located within one of Canberra’s most strongly landscape suburbs – Aranda. The suburb is characterized by mature native Eucalypts and Acacias which are prevalent as street trees, parkland plantings and adjacent public reserve. The house comprises 3 bedrooms, kitchen/dining/living space, wet areas, and garage. The primary parti of the project is to establish an internal living environment that embraces the views and textural qualities offered by the strong landscape setting – this strategy has driven internal planning decisions and resultant building form.

The project comprised alterations and additions to an existing red brick cottage in O’Connor. The primary components of the client brief included improved access to natural daylight & connection to rear yard, additional living spaces, good passive thermal performance, and flexibility of use. The existing cottage was renovated to provide new flooring finishes, new double glazed windows, wall and roof insulation and re-programming of some interior rooms. Strategically located skylights were added to increase natural daylight exposure and new roof tiles and sarking were installed. The existing house was largely retained in terms detailing and trims, The northern portion of the old house was re-programmed into a parents wing comprising bedroom, robes and ensuite. The southern portion of the house is used as living and “flexible” spaces that can become a study, spare bedroom, work out room etc.

The new house is located in a leafy inner north suburb of Canberra. There is a surrounding established mature landscape and tall canopies are visible from the back yard. The project responds to the client's desire for inverted privacy – a central courtyard formed the primary design gesture and allowed for introverted views within the block, and a largely blank, private interaction with the public street.

The apartment is located within one of Canberra’s busiest precincts and has wonderful eastern views across the suburbs of Ainslie & Braddon and to Parliament House and Civic to the south.
