Replacement Buildings Old Carpentry / Beck Oser Architekten

The conversion of the carpentry site includes a replacement building on Flühstrasse and a supplementary building on Hutmattweg. The existing buildings could not be retained due to their structural condition. The replacement building adopts the building dimensions, story, and roof form of the existing building and follows the design building line. An important goal of the transformation is a dense development with appropriately dimensioned forecourt and courtyard areas, which is typical for the site. Due to this, the supplementary building is detached from the existing building structure and is shifted in the direction of Hutmattweg. This reduces the size of the front yard formerly used by the carpentry as a lumber yard and creates a common backyard with high residential value.

The two houses “Im Wygärtli” are located in a villa garden on the southern hillside of Hofstetten. The buildings are situated across the slope and are accessed from the north on the upper floor level, which offers a beautiful view towards the first hills of the Jura Mountains. The curved shape of the roof creates its own topography, which connects the two floors and turns the location on a slope into a part of the design concept. On the inside, a single-flight staircase provides the spatial connection between the entrance hall on the upper living floor and the sleeping floor below. The dynamic and open staircase creates a strong reference between the two floors. It also allows daylight into the translucent bathroom cubes - which are built out of glass blocks and divide and structure the lower floor.

The two houses, which are combined in one building, continue the existing development along the slope edge and the street. They close the last existing gap in this line. The valley and mountain views remain unobstructed.

The two-storey detached house is set on a hill in a neighbourhood of villas located in a suburb of Basel. A private path leads to the park-like grounds set back somewhat from the street and to the house on the north edge of the plot. Various projections and set-backs together with rounded corners with varying radii lend the building a sculptural and dynamic appearance.

The dwelling house is part of the design plan Mühle, which primarily aims to preserve the protected mill and the surroundings of the mill. On the south side the building group will be completed with the replacement building for the burnt-down barn, giving it the necessary spatial and historically justified importance. The result is an attractive place of a pleasant size, usable for various activities. Since the houses on the Sternenbergstrasse, which are also part of the design plan, are at a reasonable distance and clearly distinguished in the architectural formulation, the legibility of the historical ensemble is strengthened.
