The project arises from the desire to qualify the interior space and to integrate naturally with the scale of the environment. The entire program is located at street level, in a scheme of two lines of consultations framing a higher room that receives north light from a high window.

The recovery and transformation of an old industrial building from 1920 into a museum, highlighting its special configuration in three naves and its interior textures, adding new layers that adapt it to the new use. The Oliva Artés industrial building was to be demolished in 2008 in the context of the new construction of the Central Park of Poble Nou, which planned to cut the continuity of the historic Pere IV street to which the building is closely linked. A few days before the entry of the excavators a neighbourhood association dedicated to the industrial heritage of Poble Nou convinced the City Council of the need to preserve the building, which at that time was in a state of structural ruin.

The project designed by two architecture practices – BAAS architects from Barcelona and Grupa 5 Architekci, won the first award in the competition for the Radio and Television Faculty of Silesia University in Katowice. The building permit project and construction project was done by: BAAS architects, Grupa 5 Architekci and Małeccy Biuro Projektowe from Katowice.

The site is located at the edge of the town in an area still in development. The project layout is an only pure volume, with a central courtyard sheltered from the north winds. This courtyard will be the central element for the students’ social life.
