Invited by the coffee and dessert brand “观粼QUALIA” o design its first store., We had the chance to renovate a historical tenement ’s ground floor on the road Wei Xin Heng Lu（维新横路）. The road Wei Xin Heng Lu is in a historic district on Pearl River’s north bank, named because it runs perpendicular to a main north-south Wei Xin Road (维新路. “Wei Xin”means restoration)，which now has changed its name to Qi Yi Road ( 起义路. “Qi Yi” means revolution) in 1966. It is flanked by a row of tenements that are three or four-story and constructed in concrete frame during the 1930s and 40s.

This is a takeaway coffee shop. Based on the first floor of a commercial office building near Huan Shi Dong Road, the ring road of Guangzhou City, it has only 9 square meters of indoor area. To differentiate and form an impression of the shop at the level of the street interface, we shaped our image through an independent structure, avoiding the common flatness when the façade is only a thin surface on the building’s finish. Meanwhile, we want to make the coffee shop’s facade a relatively closed way, keeping it somehow mysterious and facing the bustling street with ease.

Ningyang Road of Qingdao City was one of the earliest developments during the German-occupation period (1898–1914). In 2020, Ningyang Road started a renovation project. By this chance, a local coffee brand "Largo" invited us to Ning Yang Road, renovating an old house in this historic district. The project's site is located in a courtyard of a century-old German house (now has been listed heritage) on Ningyang Road. It consists of three rooms of different sizes, separating from the German-style main house built around the 1950s. The three rooms, totaling 40 square meters, were all brick and timber construction.

This is a renovation project of a tiny shop. Sigma coffee is a community targeting coffee shop, aiming to convey the brand vision through a relaxing and sharing space. The scope of renovation lies in the north-facing living room separated from the original residential unit, located in the first floor of a collective housing. This 8-storey house, with frame structure, is a part of the Tiyu Dong Community built in the 1990s. In front of the shop, there is a piece of wild grass. Therefore, to think about how to introduce the grassy scenery into interior space has been the starting point of the design.

The 3m x 9m narrow base is close to the neighbors, and the east-west orientation makes the external conditions even worse. The client is a couple of young artists who wish to have two bedrooms and a low cost.
