TBB Libraries – Hundred Flowers Park Libraries / Atelier Liu Yuyang Architects

Design Concept. TBB Hundred Flowers Park Libraries, embracing both east and west wings of the central civil park with a stretchy linear gesture, highlight the welcoming characteristics of entrance to the large public space. "Fan Pavilion", the Cultural Libraries resemble a traditional folding fan in response to adjacent semi-circular plazas. "Polygonal Pavilion", the Community Flowerhouses, developed from natural geometric prototypes, convey floral blessings to neighbourhoods. "Terraced Pavilion", the Service Stations attract greens into selves as rebuilt public toilets with renovated terraced roof structures. Each group of buildings is connected with a timber-steel-membrane structured pergola as a shelter from the Sun and rains, thus offering a more continuous and integrated spatial experience as well as happiness and warmth to the public.

Concept - Shang'Ao Canal Social Service Center is located at the intersection of Shang'ao Tang Waterfront Path and Quanzhou Road, serving as a critical node in the Shang'ao Tang neighborhood's urban waterfront renewal initiative. As the cultural heart of the community, the project integrates a variety of public functions, including a senior cafeteria, community library, performance space, and dance studio, offering a diverse array of services to nearby residents. This renovation aimed to enhance the overall aesthetic and functional quality, focusing on reconstructing the façade and reconfiguring the interior public spaces. Through strategic design innovations, we sought to transform the center into a distinctive and recognizable cultural hub along the waterfront.

Jing'an Yuyao Road Kindergarten Branch / Atelier Liu Yuyang Architects

Kindergartens represent the first public space that children encounter in their growth process. The scale of the space, the flexibility of its use, and the indoor scenes and atmosphere greatly influence young children's perceptions and cognitions, presenting a challenge for architects. Yuyao Road Kindergarten is a first-class kindergarten in Shanghai, located in the modern upscale residential area of the northwest corner of Jing'an District. Since its establishment in 1957, it has undergone a 48-year journey in preschool education. For many years, Yuyao Road Kindergarten has adhered to the principle of "everything for the children," a philosophy that Atelier Liu Yuyang Architects also upholds in various educational buildings. Through our design, we aim to inspire children's desire to explore and acquire knowledge, while providing them a comfort, safe place, creating a paradise that children love.

Shanghai Yangpu Riverfront Power Station Auxiliary East Building / Atelier Liu Yuyang Architects

Overall Planning and Orientation. The overall location of the project is east of the Shanghai Yangpu bridge, which belongs to the south part of the Yangpu Riverfront. This area was originally called "Yangshupu Industrial Belt"——an industrial agglomeration area south of Yangshupu Road, adjacent to Huangpu River, starting from Qinhuangdao Road in the west and ending at Liping Road in the east. From west to east, it spans six historic factories, namely, Power Station Auxiliary West Building, National Cotton No. 9 Factory, Power Station Auxiliary East Building, Shanghai Soap Factory, Yangshupu Coal yard, and Gasworks. It covers an area of about 150,000 square meters and has about 1.2 kilometers of waterfront. As the birthplace of modern industry in Shanghai, the industrial zone along the riverside stretches for tens of miles and has the characteristics of early time, multiple types, wide distribution, and large scale. The public space takes the dense industrial factory area (300-500m section) as the design node, reflecting the demand for spatial diversity.

Stargazing Pavilion
The main body of the building is divided into two independent spaces: The first floor is designed into a dodecagonal plan, which is an indoor service space defined by light steel structure and glass. The hemispherical membrane structure with a diameter of 6.6m on the second floor provides an operable shielding space for astronomical observation activities. With 18 thin columns as the foundational supports, the building "floats" on the natural soil to minimize the impact of its construction. The main structure is three pairs of "inverted V-shaped" columns supporting the second-floor slab, which not only gives an extremely visual tension but also provides sufficient anti-vibration stability for future observation use.

Overall Concept and Goal. Once carrying the branch line of Zhenru freight rail and later Caoyang Farmers’ Market, the near to 1-kilometer-long and 10- to 15-meter-wide site has been re-programmed as a fresh, multilevel, and mixed-use park, walkable and community-centered, shortly after the market’s closure in 2019. Conceived as ‘3K Corridors’, Caoyang Centennial Park brings art to community life, echoing the theme of 2021 Shanghai SUSAS. Site contexts were discovered and scenes reimagined, so as to design a vine-and-melon-like walking belt, from north to south, to reshape the streets’ grassland system, giving a further step of organic renewal of Caoyang Community. The special linear site, having served as a railway land and then a market for over 20 years, is a typical left-over space in megacities. We realize at first sight that even in a familiar city are there unexpected and surprising offcut spaces, and we must consider how to recycle them in the time of urban redevelopment.

Minsheng Ferry Station / Atelier Liu Yuyang Architects

The Minsheng Ferry Station is located at the end of Minsheng Rd, north to the Huangpu River and west to the Xinhua greenspace. The site can be accessed from Minsheng Wharf Waterfront through Huimin Bridge. As an infrastructure which connects transportation between the two coasts and an important landscape intersection along the Huangpu River, the design integrates architecture with the landscape while separating ferry passengers and slow traffic flow from three-line connection through two levels of different functions.

Glassless House, Pavilion and Pool for XY Yun House / Atelier Liu Yuyang Architects

The project is situated on a small plateau at the foothill behind Yangjia Village where the acclaimed Yun House Eco-resort is located. Through minimum ground leveling and maximum preservation of views and vegetation, the design juxtaposed a pair of wading pools and a yoga pavilion of almost equal dimensions in parallel on the site, forming a high point in the hotel’s spatial sequence.

Overview
Shenyao Art Center is transformed from an old factory to an innovation art park displaying ceramic art works. In the second phase of this project, our main strategy is to renovate existing structure of the south dormitory building while adding volumes to the north. New volumes are inserted but flexibly placed inside the factory to reconfigure the internal space, satisfying the needs of programs while at the same time enriching the playfulness of the space. On the perspective of aesthetic interpretation, the series curved spaces soften the original order.

Yangjing Canal Pedestrian Bridge / Atelier Liu Yuyang Architects

Located at the eastern tip of the East Bund Mingshen Wharf, the Yangjing Pedestrian Bridge crosses over the Yangjing Canal where it flows into the Huangpu River, connecting the Mingshen Wharf with the Yangjing Park which is visually connected to the majestic long-span Yangpu Bridge. As a triangular-shaped truss structure bridge, its main bridge width is 10.75 meters, with a span of 55 meters and a total length of 140 meters. Integrated with structure, function and form, the design utilizes the height difference of the structure to divert the various usage flows: cycling, jogging and walking. Also known as Huihong Bridge, its futuristic and graceful form represents a comet, or "Hui", streaking across the starry sky, bridging a clear and deep water, or "Hong", and pointing towards Lujiazui CBD. The bow-like structure metaphorically foretells the launching of the first slow-traffic bridge in the East Bund.

Overview
Located in Jiading District of Shanghai along Jinghu Highway, the project is a renovation and regeneration of a series of decommissioned industrial factories and annexes from the 1990's. The design adopts the idea of "unglazed fragments of porcelain" to generate the formal language of the façade intervention as well as the interior spaces. Preserving the structure and the relationship with the site, the design brings a creative atmosphere and new types of programs by adding steel structures within the original industrial spaces. The large volume of enclosed and deep factory spaces is opened up by a newly inserted landscape corridor with a glass canopy to connect the front and back sides of the site, maximizing the usage of interior spaces for people and businesses.

Shanghai Minsheng Wharf Waterfront Landscape and Reconnection / Atelier Liu Yuyang Architects

Since the concept planning design of the Minsheng Art Port in 2016, the Urban Space Art Season and the Pudong Waterfront Reconnection in 2017, the overall greening and lighting improvement of the Minsheng Terminal in 2018 and the ongoing renovation of the Minsheng Ferry Station till 2019, this is more than a public and historical waterfront, but a self-contained and vibrant landscape infrastructure. After nearly two years of landscape renovation and reconnection engeerings, the project has become the latest urban waterfront landmark of Shanghai.

The studio of Atelier Liu Yuyang Architects is housed in a normal two-story building sited in a typical Shanghai alley. The renovation is based on the original structure, but emphasises on the continuation of space and visual connection between indoor and outdoor. A glimpse through glass doors and windows or bevel skylights captured the cool shades of tree and changes of sunlight, as one senses the natural surrounding and time passing by.

Scale, flexibility, and spatial atmosphere play an important role to shape children's emotional and cognitive development. They also present challenging tasks for the architecture to inspire children to explore and learn while feeling safe and comfortable. During the initial research, the design team found that informal spaces such as corridors in front of the activity rooms often become an important place for children to inhabit, interact and play.

Located in Anting new town of Shanghai's Jiading district, Tongji University Experimental Elementary School project consists of teaching buildings, an administration building, a canteen, a gym, and elevated passages. Following the context of the original site, classrooms, offices and a sports space are connected in series through courtyards of different scales and different kinds of enclosures according to functional demands. The design of the architectural ensemble as well as its buffer spaces are well integrated into the townscape.

Her primitive vitality is hidden in these broken warehouses and we saw the possibilities to become a secret garden in the urban desert.
