Creating a Vertical High-Density Campus - The Xiaozhuang Campus of the High School Affiliated to Nanjing Normal University (NSFZ) occupies a 66,700 sq.m site, with a total building area of approximately 95,000 sq.m. A further 17,000 sq.m of semi-outdoor space is not counted toward the floor area ratio. The campus is designed to accommodate 42 classes, forming a high-density, compact campus due to the limited land availability. At the center of the site, a heritage structure—the former Second Communication Station of the Republic of China Air Force is preserved, along with a high-rise dormitory built in recent years that awaits renovation.

Typological analysis

The design of speculative office towers is usually dictated by sets of conventions such as safety concerns and natural light. The project, a high-rise speculative office tower, is located at the Zhengdong New District in the city of Zhengzhou. After studying various precedents, we decided to accept the prototypical, rectilinear plan with centralized cores as a starting point while looking actively for improvements during the design process.

The Morphing Pavilion by the Tai Lake
The Nine-Square Pavilion is situated within the Bogongdao Ecological Park of Wuxi City. The plot is adjacent to Qinyin Bridge, with an open view on the east side; a bamboo grove on the west; and only ten meters away from Li Lake, an inner lake of Tai Lake, on the south side, boasting exceptional sceneries. The function of the project is a tea house. Our initial concept involves a glass pavilion with some interior spaces that embraces the surrounding landscape conditions.

Implementation of the New Educational System - The first construction section of the China Academy of Art's (CAA) Liangzhu Campus Phase Ⅰ in Hangzhou was completed in 2022, followed by the second section completed in August 2023, resulting in a fully operational campus with 180,000 sqm of building area. At the onset of the Liangzhu Campus design competition, participating teams were required to conceive an innovative educational system aligned with socioeconomic development. This educational paradigm, proposed by Atelier FCJZ, encompasses several key facets that have been set into motion: 1. embracing hands-on pedagogy; 2. integrating architectural studies into the general education; 3. prioritizing research-led coursework at advanced levels; 4. encouraging students to organize interest clubs; 5. abolishing conventional departmental structure; 6. pioneering the concept of living and learning intertwined, which impacts campus planning directly.

The Challenge. The density of cities today is much higher than it used to be and is still increasing. What are the main differences between a primary school in a high-density environment and one in a low-density environment in the past? As density increases, the height of the school building inevitably increases, which means the opportunities for students to go down to the outdoor space on the ground level are correspondingly reduced. Outdoor activities are critical to the development of children, and we focused on solving this problem when designing the school building.

Commercial and Cultural Architecture. The BMW Center is a 4S dealership housed in a singular volume. This design proposal pays homage to the architectural heritage of Jiangnan by having an inner courtyard at its core, similar to those found in the vernacular houses in the region. Encircled by a staircase leading to the rooftop, this courtyard allows clients to admire its landscape while exploring the cars displayed inside. The facades of the building, both external and internal, boast white terracotta bricks, an interpretation of traditional materials, while white is the trademark color of the BMW dealership as well.

On the enchanting banks of the Li River, beneath the fantastic peaks of Yangshuo Karst Mountains, the former State-owned sugar mill, revitalized by architect Gong Dong (Vector Architects), now stands transformed into the Yangshuo Sugar House. The once fervent sugar extraction season finds a renewed life in the Sugar House's New Year Countdown Festival. The Wood Lace Tower is set to burn on the central terrace by the riverbank precisely at the stroke of midnight on December 31, 2023.

Climate-Driven Design
Wenzhou, a city that has a name hinting at a mild climate. This prompted us to imagine a more intimate connection between people and nature, emphasizing more outdoor activities and living specifically. The climatic context became the genesis for conceptualizing the Wenzhou Medical University International Exchange Center. The specific site, embraced by continuous tree canopies, makes a pleasing landscape.

Function. The Nantou Neighborhood Center, situated on the original site of two community service facilities with residential units above, has undergone a transformative evolution. After adaptive renovation, the building is set to embrace a multifaceted role, encompassing a community hospital, community offices, local cultural exhibitions, classrooms, and meeting rooms. This comprehensive approach seeks to not only provide administrative office space but also cater to the healthcare needs of Nantou residents, seamlessly integrating it into their daily lives.

The 600-year-old ancient village of Langtou is located in the northern suburbs of Guangzhou. As a well-known “accomplished scholars village,” Langtou has many well-preserved old architectural spaces, such as academies of classical learning, ancestral temples, vernacular houses, streets, and alleys,. The word "lang" originally meant the marshland next to the river, and its meaning also extends to lakes or ponds. The ancient village is surrounded by numerous ponds: lotus ponds, fish ponds, and Feng Shui ponds; when the breeze stirs the lotus leaves, it makes a beautiful scenery of Lingnan (south of the Five Mountains) water landscape. ChunYangTai, which we designed, is situated in a lotus pond outside the ancient village.

A permanent exposition of architecture - This project is located in the Cité Internationale Universitaire de Paris (CIUP) in the 14th Arrondissement of Paris. The university city was established to provide housing primarily to international students in Paris in 1925 and has now more than 40 dormitory buildings named after different countries. It is well known for its remarkable collection of architecture, such as the ‘Collège Néerlandais’ (The Netherlands College,1926) designed by Willem M. Dudok, the ‘Pavilion Suisse’ (The Pavilion of Switzerland, 1930) by Le Corbusier, the ‘Maison du Brésil’ (Home of Brazil,1954) by Lucio Costa and Le Corbusier, and the ‘Pavilion de L’Iran’ (Pavilion of Iran,1969) by Claude Parent.

Towards a New Mode of Education. Liangzhu is an area in the city of Hangzhou where a new campus of China Academy of Art (CAA) is sited. At Liangzhu, this art-based comprehensive university plans to have four academic divisions, which are College of Innovative Design, College of Art Management, College of Foundational Education, and College of Continuing Education and will house 3000 full-time students and 1000 continuing education students. The four main objectives of this new campus include developing interdisciplinary innovative talents; promoting design and informational economy; integrating artificial intelligence technology; and setting another benchmark for contemporary design education. At the stage of the campus design competition, CAA asked the participating architects to envision an educational system that would meet the mandates given.

Use of the status quo/ Cope with structure. There were existing foundations and basements on the site when FCJZ received the commission to redesign the buildings from the ground up. We transformed the previous 9m square-column grid into a concrete structural system that places columns at 4.5m intervals and spans 28-32m. The new columns take on the shape of a 0.3m thick shear wall.

Project Background + Current Stage
Since 2006, Atelier FCJZ has produced a comprehensive planning scheme and architectural design guidelines for the Novartis Shanghai Campus, in addition to designing one research laboratory building on the Campus. In a continuation of the methods used by Novartis' Basel Campus in Switzerland, each building at the Shanghai Campus is also designed by a different architect. Further, a number of the buildings and elements of the landscape of the central garden and courtyard are also designed by different designers. With regard to design, Novartis provided architects with the following direction: "In the Shanghai Campus, we wish to achieve modern laboratories and modern workspaces, providing researchers with a relaxing and home-like environment such with greater opportunities to interact and cooperate, and make better use of their creativity." In 2016, Novartis Shanghai Campus had its Phase I construction completed, with a total of seven buildings.
